The Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro launched in 2022 shipped with the troublesome Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SOC, which was based on Samsung’s 4nm fabrication, which wasn’t very efficient and posed a lot of performance and thermal problems.
This led to the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro having serious overheating issues even in simple daily use like using the cameras, and also subpar gaming performance due to thermal throttling. On the bright side, the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro seem to turn things around since early benchmark scores report a tremendous boost in performance.
Xiaomi has recently confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC will be used for the Xiaomi 13 series. On Geekbench, the Xiaomi 13 Pro scored an excellent 5342 in the multi-core score and over 1504 in the single-core score. The vanilla Xiaomi 13 scored 5343 on the multi-core test and 1507 on the single-core test.
The Xiaomi 2211133C and Xiaomi 2210132C are most likely the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro. They share the same SOC, with 8 CPUs and three efficiency cores. At the Snapdragon summit, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which offers one primary core, four performance cores, and three efficiency cores.
The 8 Gen 2 contains the Cortex X3 core (3.2 GHz), four performance cores (Cortex A715), and three efficiency cores at 2.02 GHz. The Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro offer 12 Gigabytes of RAM this time, so they share the same performance since they provide the same SOCs.
On Geekbench, they both offer remarkably similar benchmark scores, around 5300 multi-core and 1500 single-core. Samsung so far has the highest frequency of the 8 Gen 2, but according to early benchmark scores of the S23 Ultra, it so far scores below the Xiaomi 13 Pro, which does not run an overclocked version of the chip; it uses the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
For reference, the S23 Ultra, with a higher clocked chip, scores around 4700 on Geekbench, but since there’s still time for the launch, there might be an optimization flaw at the moment, and the overall performance might improve with time. However, we now have a new lead in performance for CPU in the Android world, which goes to the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro.
The Xiaomi 13 Pro looks like an exciting phone with the IMX 989 as its primary sensor, a 1″ type sensor from Sony that is well renowned. Leaks visualize a polarising design, a zoom lens, and an upgraded ultrawide camera. We also will see a 1440P 120Hz OLED (E6) display with support for Dolby Vision and crazy peak brightness levels. It will have 8 or 12GB RAM for the base variant.
The Xiaomi 13 Pro is a well-rounded flagship with excellent specs and can rival the top phones. The only thing it lacks is a periscope lens, but that’s not expected at a price it’s launching for, around 899 USD, according to leaks. It will also mostly run Xiaomi’s MIUI 14 skin based on Android 13 out of the box.
The Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro score significantly more than the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro. They score 20% more in the single-core CPU test and 45% more in the multi-core test. It isn’t enough to dethrone Apple’s A16 in the CPU department yet, though, since the A16 scores over 5600 in multi-core tests and 1800-1900 in the single-core tests.
