Lineage OS 18 Custom ROM: Everything We Know So Far

Lineage OS 18 will probably be based on Android 11

Every year we have Google launching their next version of Android, and this time around, we have Android 11. Smartphone manufacturers use their source code and develop their custom UI based on the Android version. However, there are some independent developers too who just work on the latest release and launch their take on the Android platform. These independently developed ROMs are what we call Custom ROMs.

One of the most loved and appreciated Custom ROM out there is the Lineage OS. It comes from the people behind the CyanogenMod. As of now, Lineage OS 17/17.1 is officially released for a bunch of Android devices. It does not matter if it is a smartphone or a tablet, as long as you have a custom recovery to install the firmware.

Lineage OS 18 Custom ROM

The next iteration from Lineage OS developers will likely be the Lineage OS 18, which will come with Android 11 in its heart. Much like other Custom ROMs, Lineage OS is built based on Android AOSP source code, with the addition of some new features and customizations on their own. Lineage OS is also one of the fewest Custom ROMs that have a history of pushing out regular updates. The updates are mostly for bug fixes and the addition of new customizations. So if you are someone who is looking for the latest Android ROM for your smartphone, that is clean and minimalistic, much like the pure Android we see on the Pixel devices, then Lineage OS is custom ROM that you must give a try.

We have no information about the features that will be introduced in Lineage OS 18. They usually add a ton of additional features besides the usual Android features. But nothing has been officially reported for the Lineage OS 18. All we know for sure that the Android 11 features will be present in Lineage OS 18. Additional Lineage OS features will make its way to the OS when it officially launches.

Release Date

Android 11’s source code is now available on AOSP. So, the Lineage developers can now start working on the Lineage OS 18. We don’t know when it will be issued for Android smartphones, but we can expect them to release it soon, probably in December 2020. To be precise, we should see this custom ROM based on Android 11 coming to a smartphone in the next couple of months.
