Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus Launched: Price, Specifications

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi today launched the highly anticipated smartphones, the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus, at an event in Beijing. The two devices will be the successors of the Redmi 4 series of smartphones, which was widely received and made record-breaking sales. The two devices were the two most popular phones in India this year.

The Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus look similar and have similar designs. Both smartphones adopt an 18:9 aspect ratio Full-view display for enhancing the media and gaming experience. They have an aluminum body with rounded corners and thin bezels on both top and bottom. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device. The smartphones will be available in Black, Blue, Pink, and Gold variants.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of HD+(720 x 1440 pixels) and 282ppi pixel density. It is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 450 SoC clocked at up to 1.8 GHz coupled with 2 GB RAM+ 16 GB internal space or 3 GB of RAM+ 32 GB internal memory. The device measures 151.8 x 72.8 x 7.7 mm and weighs 157 grams.

The  Redmi 5 Plus sports a bigger 5.99-inch display with a resolution of Full HD+(1080 x 2160 pixels) and 403ppi pixel density. It is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC clocked at 2 GHz coupled with 3 GB of RAM + 32 GB internal space or 4 GB RAM + 64 GB internal space. The device measures 158.5 x 75.45 x 8.05 mm and weighs 180 grams.

Both smartphones have expandable memory options and carry a 12 MP rear camera with a 1.25-micron pixel sensor, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, LED flash, and a 5 MP front camera with a soft-light selfie flash module. There is also a Beautify 3.0 app to enhance selfies. Both smartphones run Android 7.1.2 Nougat but come with the latest MIUI 9, focusing on speed, fluency, and stability. The new Smart Assistant, image search, new mart App launcher, and the split screen feature available on Android 8.0 Oreo will surely enhance your experience.

The Redmi 5 is backed by a 3300 mAh battery, while the Redmi 5 Plus packs a 4,000 mAh battery. Connectivity options on both phones include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 (b/g/n on Redmi 5 and a/b/g/n on Redmi 5 Plus), Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, and proximity sensor.

The Redmi 5 is priced at CNY 799 (Rs. 7,800 approx) for the 2 GB RAM+16 GB storage variant and CNY 899 (Rs. 8,800 approx) for the 3 GB RAM+32 GB storage variant. The Redmi 5 Plus costs CNY 999 (Rs. 9,700 approx) for the 3 GB RAM+ 32 GB storage variant and CNY 1,299 (Rs. 12,700 approx) for the 4 GB RAM/+64 GB storage. At this price range, the Redmi 5 goes against Moto C Plus, Panasonic P55 Max, and Eluga I5, while the Redmi 5 Plus competes against the Honor 7X, which will be launched today. They will be available for sale from December 12 in China, but there is no word about the global or India release.
