Oppo Android 12 ColorOS 12 Update: Everything We Know So Far

Oppo had stepped up their Android update program big time when the beta version of Android 11 was launched. It was one of the first OEMs to push the Android 11 beta program to its flagship series phones, the Find X2 and Find X2 Pro. Later, when Google rolled out the stable version of Android 11, Oppo kept on its way and pushed out Android 11-based ColorOS 11 update for some of their devices. Even now, many Oppo phones are getting stable Android 11 update.

Android 11 is no longer the latest Android version. Google released the developer preview build of Android 12 exclusively for the Google Pixel devices. After a couple of developer preview builds, Google has now finally released the beta build. Oppo has joined in on this journey with Google. Oppo will bring Android 12 updates for their smartphones and ColorOS 12, the successor to the ColorOS 11. However, initially, the Android 12 version could be based on the current ColorOS 11.

ColorOS 12 Release Date

  • Oppo launched ColorOS 12, based on Android 12, for global users on October 11, 2021. The public Beta is now rolling out.

Last year, several Android smartphone manufacturers, together with Google, released the beta version of the latest Android version for their flagship devices. Oppo was one of those manufacturers that released the beta version of Android 11 for their flagship Find X2 series smartphones. If Oppo keeps on that trend, we can expect to see the beta build of Android 12 running on Oppo Find X3 series smartphones soon after the beta release of Android 12.

Gradually, after a few Beta builds, Google will release the stable build of Android 12 in October. A few weeks after that, Oppo should also release the stable build of ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 for their flagship devices. After that, the rest of the Oppo lineup will also receive the new update.

  • Privacy features

Design and visuals

OPPO has refined ColorOS over the previous two years, so it’s no surprise that ColorOS 12 is getting further tweaks. The interface has been changed to better handle information density, and there’s a new Infinite Design style with revised system icons that are “closer to reality.” ColorOS 12 is meant to be “genuine” and “lower noise,” with enhanced text contrast and distinct colors interwoven with white space, according to OPPO.

In ColorOS 12, OPPO has also changed the arrangement of UI components to control information density better. ColorOS 12 has all of its UI components neatly spaced out, leaving enough white space to assist users in readily discerning information. OPPO has also improved the text contrast and introduced distinct color tones to provide a more pleasant experience for customers.

Omoji

Yes, you read that correctly: Omoji. You may expect it to be similar to Apple Emoji, but you’d be wrong. It’s an avatar emoji function that creates a customized avatar using 20,000 distinct markers. Based on those markers, the function creates a high-precision 3D model, which you can use for video chats, profile photos, and more. In short, you can create your own emoji stickers based on your selfies and pics.

Floating Windows

All Android skins, including MIUI, OxygenOS, and EMUI, include a feature called Floating Windows. However, it appears that OPPO has come up with a superior implementation. The floating windows functionality has also been improved, allowing you to effortlessly switch between full-screen, small window, and micro window modes when viewing on-screen material. The Smart Sidebar 2.0 feature offers additional utilities and proposes contextual activities based on what you’re doing on the phone, similar to Samsung’s Edge Panels.

PC connect

OPPO is releasing a new Cross-Screen Interconnection function that allows you to connect your phone to your laptop without any issues. You’ll be able to see incoming alerts, exchange files between devices, and edit papers stored on your phone straight on your laptop if you do it this way. The functionality is compatible with a “majority of laptops from mainstream brands” that run Windows 10, but we’ll have to wait until ColorOS 12 goes worldwide to see how well it works in practice. There’s also a Car Screen Projection function that works with Kuwo, Ximalaya, Baidu Maps, AutoNavi, and other Chinese services, similar to Android Auto Wireless.

Quantum Animation Engine

OPPO is announcing a new Quantum Animation Engine that promises lifelike-animated effects across ColorOS 12. These animations, according to OPPO, replicate “physical tendencies of resistance, inertia, and rebound” in order to make the entire experience “more realistic, smoother, and intuitive.”

Performance Effects

OPPO has added an anti-stutter AI engine in ColorOS 12 to handle delays and stutters across the UI. By processing cold and hot data independently, OPPO claims to be able to “effectively minimize the formation of fragments.” Internally, OPPO evaluated this AI engine and discovered the following:

“According to results from a test done at the OPPO tech labs, when a phone was simulated for 36 months of continuous usage, the read/write performance was reduced by less than 5%, and the total aging rate was just 2.75 percent.” The anti-stutter AI engine may also propose app priorities based on user habits to guarantee seamless functioning.

Privacy features

ColorOS 12 also includes the new Android 12 privacy and security features. When an app utilizes the phone’s microphone, camera, or location, it will now alert users. Its permissions reminder function will send messages to third-party apps, preventing them from gathering background data. It also has thorough permission management to assist users in understanding and managing their various permissions. Additionally, ColorOS 12 has a secure sharing function that allows users to erase metadata from photos before sharing them. Other OEMs have included a similar functionality in their Android skins, so it’s nice to see OPPO come on board.

Having that said, what do you think about the newly added features, such as PC connect and an all-new privacy protection system? Do let us know by dropping a comment in your words below.

But in the past, we have seen almost every Oppo smartphone, from the budget to the flagship lineup, receiving at least two major Android updates. Here, we have compiled a list of all such Oppo phones that came with Android 10 or Android 11 out of the box. Eventually, all these devices should receive the Android 12 update if nothing goes wrong.
