Sony launches LYTIA 610 sensor to close the gap between primary and telephoto smartphone cameras

Smartphone makers constantly fight a hardware compromise when designing secondary lenses. They must choose between fast autofocus and raw detail retention on smaller sensors.

According to an official announcement from Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the upcoming LYTIA 610 aims to eliminate that choice. The new 1/2-type, 64-megapixel CMOS sensor introduces a novel pixel architecture built for both speed and clarity.

Sony calls the new design an “RB2×2 OCL” (On Chip Lens) pixel structure. It physically combines two distinct lens arrangements on a single sensor. Standard 1×1 structures handle high-resolution image capture. A secondary 2×2 arrangement manages the autofocus.

This hybrid approach relies on a dedicated remosaicing algorithm to process the mixed data. The result is a 20 percent increase in spatial resolution compared to Sony’s previous-generation LYTIA 601, despite both sensors sharing the same 0.7 µm pixel size.

Upgrading the telephoto experience

Secondary cameras often struggle to match the performance of massive main sensors. Users frequently notice a sharp drop in autofocus reliability and fine detail when switching to a zoom lens.

The LYTIA 610 directly addresses this disparity. By packing faster autofocus and higher spatial resolution into a compact 1/2-type footprint, manufacturers can build telephoto modules that feel identical to the primary shooter in daily use. The gap in optical performance shrinks.

Bringing high-framerate video to smaller lenses

Historically, high-speed readout limits restricted premium video features to large primary sensors. Smaller modules typically capped out at standard framerates.

Sony’s new sensor breaks that limitation. The LYTIA 610 enables 4K 120 fps video recording. This marks the first time Sony has achieved this framerate on a 1/2-type sensor. For content creators, this means the ability to shoot high-resolution slow-motion video without being forced to use the wide-angle main camera.

Mass production shipments for the LYTIA 610 begin at the end of June 2026. The hardware presents a clear path to uniform multi-lens camera systems. The lingering question is which Android manufacturer will be the first to integrate it, and whether the complex mixed-pixel processing will hold up under challenging low-light conditions as well as it captures well-lit detail.
