The design of Samsung’s Ultra phones has not changed much in the last few years. The S22 Ultra had a design with five individual camera rings at the back. They’re neatly packed at the top-left of the phone. The design stands out from the generic circular camera modules and is well-reputed even today for being among the best flagship camera module designs.
Despite the camera module staying similar since the S22 Ultra, the overall back and sides went through some changes. The S24 Ultra is boxy and flat and has sharp corners. The display is flat and loses the iconic curved screen of Samsung Ultra flagships. However, this makes way for very thin bezels.
The bezels are thin on the S24 Ultra, and Samsung plans to make them even slimmer on the S25 Ultra.
According to a new report, they’re also adding rounded corners to the phone. The sharp corners look really good, but many people report comfort issues. If someone isn’t using a case, the sharp design can dig into your palms and leave a mark or cause discomfort.
It also makes the phone’s weight perception heavier. The only negative reception about the ergonomics of the S24 Ultra was that it was uncomfortable to hold due to the sharp and boxy design.
This design works for smaller and compact phones. It improves grip, and they aren’t as heavy. Rounded corners and a pebble-like design feel a bit slippery, but it’s a lot more comfortable to hold and does not leave dents in your palm.
However, it’s a bit difficult to fit internals as effectively, and it comes at the cost of thicker bezels. Thin bezels and more internal space are two key reasons for moving to flat sides, which many companies have begun doing since Apple restarted this trend with the iPhone 12 series.
As per a new post on X (formerly Twitter) from Ice Universe, Samsung is changing the design. It’s a bit similar to the S24 and S24+ now. They no longer pierce your hands at sharp right angles.
It now has a flat front and flat back as well. The back is a lot more flatter than the S24 Ultra. It is difficult to judge much from the initial renders. However, the design might lack symmetry. The back might be rounded, and the front be fully flat to improve ergonomics. The reception to this news was largely positive.
Naturally, the border radius also will change. Instead of a right-angle with a rectangular display, Samsung will change it to fit the new rounded corners better.
