Pixel Watch 4 LTE users report inconsistent cellular connectivity issues

Pixel Watch 4 LTE adopters are beginning to flag reliability concerns with standalone connectivity, with reports of inconsistent LTE behavior when the watch is away from its paired phone.

One detailed account from a Reddit user highlights a pattern of intermittent disconnections, failed messaging attempts, and the need for frequent restarts to restore cellular data. The issue appears to affect core use cases of the LTE model, which is designed to operate independently of a smartphone.

Users report unstable LTE connections

In a Reddit post, user SquirrelFar9890 describes an otherwise positive experience with the Pixel Watch 4 LTE, particularly its ability to reduce phone use and encourage more focused daily habits. But that experience is undermined by unreliable LTE performance.

According to the user, the watch often fails to connect to LTE when out of Bluetooth range of the phone. Restoring connectivity requires a full reboot of the device. That workaround works, but only temporarily.

Text messaging is also inconsistent. Messages are sometimes sent and received without issue, even when the paired phone is miles away. At other times, the watch reports being “disconnected from phone” and fails to send anything at all. The behavior is described as unpredictable.

The setup in question uses a Verizon Number Share plan, with the primary phone left powered on and connected at home. That rules out basic phone-side availability issues, pointing instead to either network provisioning problems or watch-side software bugs.

Context and possible causes

This isn’t the first time LTE-enabled smartwatches have struggled with standalone connectivity. Earlier Pixel Watch models, as well as competing devices, have occasionally experienced issues with eSIM provisioning, carrier compatibility, and handoff between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE.

The Pixel Watch 4 relies on automatic switching between these connection modes. If that transition fails or stalls, the device may not properly fall back to LTE when the phone is out of range.

Carrier plans can complicate things further. The Reddit user notes frustration with Google’s promotional data offer, which reportedly does not cover calls, texts, or RCS messaging. That limitation could create confusion around which features should work over LTE and which require additional carrier support.

Still, the need to reboot the watch to regain LTE suggests something deeper than plan limitations.

Real-world impact

For users buying the LTE variant specifically to reduce phone dependence, reliability is the entire value proposition.

When LTE fails, the watch effectively reverts to a companion device rather than a standalone one. Missed texts, failed message sends, and inconsistent connectivity undercut key scenarios like workouts, commuting, or leaving the phone behind intentionally.

That gap becomes more noticeable when compared to competing devices like the Apple Watch cellular models, which generally maintain more stable standalone connections in similar conditions.

Google has not yet publicly acknowledged any widespread LTE issues with the Pixel Watch 4. It’s also unclear whether this is an isolated case, a carrier-specific problem, or an early software bug that could be addressed in an update.

For now, affected users are left deciding between troubleshooting, requesting replacements, or waiting for a fix.
