Google’s December 2024 software update seems to have created a frustrating issue for some Pixel phone users. The update is causing mobile data to drop randomly even when the phone shows a strong signal.
The problem seems to affect several Pixel models including the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and Pixel 9 series. Several users have reported on Reddit and Pixel Community.
A Pixel 7 owner wrote that their phone started overheating and now keeps losing its mobile data connection. In the same thread, a Pixel 8 user confirmed the issue as well.
One Pixel 9 Pro user shared that the phone shows an exclamation mark in the status bar when the data connection drops. Restarting the phone helps but only for a short while before the issue comes back. A Pixel 9 Pro XL owner said the phone regularly loses its internet connection though phone calls still work fine.
It’s worth noting that not everyone is experiencing these problems. Many Pixel users say their devices are working fine after the update.
The December 2024 update was supposed to improve how Pixel phones handle network connections. But instead of fixing things it seems to have made mobile data less reliable for some users.
For those dealing with the issue, some temporary fixes might help. Resetting your network settings by going to Settings> System> Reset Options> Reset Mobile Network Settings has worked for some people. Others have said turning off 4G or VoLTE calling also works which can be done in Settings> Network & Internet> SIMs> Provider’s Name.
Unfortunately, these solutions don’t work for everyone. Some users have tried factory resets but even that hasn’t solved the problem in every case.
Not all Pixel users are affected but it’s a big problem for those who rely on their phones. For now, try the temporary fixes or contact your carrier or Google support. So far Google hasn’t said anything about the bug or when a fix might arrive. We’ll let you know if there’s an update.
