Google rolled out Android Emergency Location Service in India this week, marking the first operational deployment of the life-saving feature in the country. The rollout begins in Uttar Pradesh, where the state government and police have integrated the service with the national 112 emergency response system.

Uttar Pradesh is the first state in India to enable the service by fully integrating it with its 112 emergency response system infrastructure, executed with support from Pert Telecom Solutions Pvt Ltd (PertSol).

Before this formal rollout, Google and local partners conducted a pilot phase in Uttar Pradesh that processed more than 20 million emergency calls and messages, successfully identifying caller locations even when calls dropped quickly.

Why It Matters

Emergencies often leave callers unable to explain their location due to panic, injury, or weak network connectivity. Android Emergency Location Service uses a device’s GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network signals to calculate and transmit a precise location — often within about 50 metres — directly to emergency call centers, even if the call drops shortly after connecting.

This level of location accuracy can significantly improve emergency response times from police, medical teams, or fire services by eliminating guesswork and delays caused by unclear directions.

How It Works

When an Android phone running Android 6.0 or newer places a call or sends a message to 112, the feature:

  • Activates automatically in the background.
  • Uses fused location data (GPS + Wi-Fi + cellular) to pinpoint the device.
  • Sends the precise coordinates directly to the emergency response system.
  • Does not require any additional app, hardware, or user action.
  • Does not collect or store location data with Google.

Google notes the feature is free of charge and is strictly used during emergency interactions, addressing common privacy concerns about location services.

What’s Next

With Uttar Pradesh leading adoption, other Indian states are expected to follow suit in the coming months. Expansion will hinge on infrastructure integrations with 112 call centers, state authorities, and emergency management agencies.
