Google Fi Wireless is rolling out a broad set of travel-focused upgrades for its Unlimited Premium plan, with improvements spanning international 5G access, network switching, VPN availability, Wi-Fi connectivity, and troubleshooting tools.
The update arrives ahead of the summer travel season and targets one of Google Fi’s biggest selling points: international connectivity. According to Google, the new features are available at no additional cost for Unlimited Premium subscribers.
Google is also offering a limited-time promotion for new customers. Those who sign up for the Unlimited Premium plan before June 30, 2026, can receive 50% off the plan for their first year.
Pixel phones gain smarter international network switching
One of the biggest upgrades is improved international network switching on Pixel devices.
Google says Pixel phones can now switch between multiple international carrier networks in real time using upgraded dual cellular switching technology. The system is designed to connect users to a stronger available signal more quickly when traveling abroad, reducing the need for manual carrier selection.
For travelers moving between cities, airports, or regions with varying carrier coverage, the change could translate into fewer connection drops and faster recovery when signal quality deteriorates.
5G coverage expands to more countries
Google is also expanding its international 5G footprint.
The company says 5G roaming is now available in 22 additional countries and territories, including Morocco and Colombia. That brings Google Fi’s total 5G availability to more than 110 countries worldwide.
The expansion further strengthens Google Fi’s position among U.S. carriers that cater to frequent international travelers. Faster network access can have a noticeable impact on navigation apps, cloud services, video calls, and large file downloads while abroad.
Google is also highlighting support for data-only eSIMs, allowing subscribers to share coverage with up to five additional cellular-enabled devices, such as tablets, smartwatches, or laptops, without paying extra line fees.
VPN and Wi-Fi features get broader availability
Security is another focus of the update.
Google’s built-in VPN by Google is now available in more destinations, including Japan and South Korea. The service automatically encrypts internet traffic to help protect users when browsing on public Wi-Fi networks in hotels, airports, and other high-traffic locations.
The company is also expanding Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+, or W+, into select locations across Europe and Asia. Google describes the service as a way to automatically connect devices to premium Wi-Fi networks, which it says can be twice as reliable as relying solely on cellular connectivity in crowded indoor environments. Connections are automatically encrypted as well.
Fi app can now detect and fix connection problems
Google is making setup and support more proactive.
When users activate Google Fi on an Android device, the Fi app can now verify that key services such as SIM activation and messaging are functioning correctly before travel. If connectivity issues occur abroad, the app can automatically detect and resolve certain problems. In situations that require user intervention, it provides guided troubleshooting steps.
That addition addresses a common pain point for international travelers: diagnosing network issues often requires navigating unfamiliar carrier settings or contacting support while already disconnected.
Google Fi has long differentiated itself through international roaming support, but these latest upgrades suggest the company is placing even greater emphasis on travel convenience. The bigger question may be whether expanded 5G access, automated network management, and broader Wi-Fi integration are enough to persuade travelers to switch carriers before the June 30 promotional deadline.
