Recently, Samsung teased a new “Ultra” foldable device launching this summer. The company did not share any official images or specifications. We only got the teaser. However, many people were assuming it’s a new triple-folding Ultra device.
Upgrades in the foldable segment have stagnated as well, and people are hoping for something truly innovative. The Z Fold 6 lineup and the Z Fold 5 lineup – both of them were highly iterative upgrades. The upcoming Z Fold 7 FE is just a Z Fold 6 with a potential chip swap and a lower price tag. Where would an Ultra foldable device sit in this lineup?
As per leaker Max Jambor on X, Samsung may not actually release an Ultra model this year. While Samsung’s GIF may hint at an upcoming “Ultra” foldable, the company might just bring the “Ultra” experience to the Z Fold 7 instead.
That’s a lot less exciting. The Z Fold 7 may get the 200MP main camera sensor from the S25 Ultra. The same sensor was also used on the S25 Edge. It’s also an upgrade in performance, since it’ll use the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip, which is also found in the S25 Ultra.
The Z Fold 6 used a weaker 50MP 1/1.56″ main camera sensor, and the 200MP HP2 sensor is a lot larger and more capable at 1/1.3″. Samsung might improve the under-display selfie camera with this model as well. The rest of the camera setup, including the ultra-wide and the 3X telephoto camera, will largely remain the same. It’s slightly disappointing, since the tiny 1/4″ 3X telephoto is long overdue for an upgrade.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 currently costs 1899$ to buy. The Fold 7 might start at 1999$, and there’s a chance that the prices may increase. The Z Fold 7 FE might slot in at a lower price tag, around 1599$. To justify this higher price tag, Samsung will mostly advertise the “Ultra” 200MP main camera experience, and overall, more premium materials.
More importantly, the new foldable will be noticeably thinner, and that makes it more convenient to hold, gives it a premium in-hand feel, and a better multitasking experience. The Fold 7 is potentially just 9.5mm when closed, which is a much better form factor. The Fold 6 (Fold 7 FE/ SE) is 12.1mm when closed, which is a very noticeable difference.
When opened, the Fold 7 might be just 4.5mm in thickness, which is impressive. For context, the older Z Fold 6 is 5.6mm when open.
We’ll have to find out more information at Galaxy Unpacked. Samsung could host it on 10th July, and the event is probably in New York, which is after a long while. There’s no official information from the company yet.
