Samsung 200MP ISOCELL HP1 and 50MP ISOCELL GN5 Specifications

The new ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor from the North Korean electronics powerhouse has finally been released. The ISOCELL HP1 is the world’s first 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor. It’s a 1/1.22-inch sensor with 0.64m pixels, the company’s most sophisticated. Using pixel binning technology, it can create 50-megapixel or 12.5-megapixel stills. They also unveiled their new 50-megapixel camera sensor at the same time. The 50-megapixel camera sensor has been dubbed as ISOCELL GN5.

Samsung ISOCELL HP1: 200MP king or a gimmick?

The Samsung ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor has ChameleonCell, a brand-new pixel-binning technology. If the name “Chameleon” makes you think of something, you’re right. This technique enables the sensor to adapt to its surroundings and select the best pixel arrangement for the job. In strong light, the camera captures 16,384 x 12,288 resolution photos with an “amazing level of detail that helps the image stay crisp even when cropped or scaled,” according to the manufacturer.

In addition to recording 8K films at 30fps, Samsung’s new 200MP camera is also capable of recording 4K videos at 30fps. The camera, according to the firm, employs 22 pixels binning to reduce the resolution to 50-megapixels to record 8K movies. In this way, there is no need to trim or reduce the original resolution.

A 50-megapixel camera with 1.28m-sized pixels is created when the sensor utilizes 22 pixels binning (merging four nearby pixels). More light may be absorbed, and a greater amount of sensitivity can be achieved, resulting in brilliance. This camera can also combine 16 adjacent pixels (44) to absorb even more light while maintaining image quality in the darkest conditions. As a result, it becomes a 12.5-megapixel camera with pixels of 2.56m in size. FHD videos are recorded at 240fps if you convert to 4K resolution. As for focusing, the camera utilizes Double Super PD autofocus technology.

Samsung ISOCELL GN5: New 50MP midrange camera king?

With a 1/1.57-inch footprint, the new Samsung ISOCELL GN5 camera sensor has a 50-megapixel resolution. For fast, all-direction autofocusing, it employs Dual Pixel Pro autofocus technology. Two photodiodes have been put into each pixel of the sensor for rapid autofocusing. Samsung believes this allows for “sharper pictures in either bright or low-lit settings.” The ISOCELL GN5 can also capture 8K movies at 30 frames per second, 4K videos at 120 frames per second, and FHD videos at 240 frames per second.

This sensor can record pictures at a resolution of 50 megapixels (8,160 × 6,144 pixels). In low-light situations, though, it may employ 22-pixel binning for 12.5-megapixel stills. Samsung’s patented Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) technology absorbs and holds more light in the camera. According to the manufacturer, this decreases crosstalk inside the pixel.
