Apple finally brings Sleep Apnea alerts and Hearing Tests to users in India

Apple is expanding its health-focused features in India with the rollout of Sleep Apnea notifications for the Apple Watch and a clinically validated Hearing Test feature for AirPods Pro users. The two tools were first introduced globally in 2024, but Indian users had been waiting for regional approval and availability.

The update pushes Apple deeper into preventive healthcare, an area the company has steadily prioritized across the Apple Watch and AirPods lineup. Instead of positioning these devices purely as consumer electronics, Apple increasingly wants them viewed as early warning systems for health conditions that often go undiagnosed for years.

According to Apple, the features are now available in India starting this week.

Apple Watch can now flag possible sleep apnea

The Sleep Apnea notification system relies on a metric called “Breathing Disturbances.” Using the Apple Watch accelerometer, the device monitors subtle wrist movements linked to interrupted breathing patterns during sleep.

Apple says the watch analyzes this data over a 30-day period. If the algorithm detects consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea, users receive a notification advising them to consult a healthcare professional. The Health app can also generate a PDF report containing up to three months of breathing disturbance data for doctor consultations.

Sleep apnea is one of the more underdiagnosed sleep disorders globally. Apple cites estimates suggesting the condition affects more than one billion people worldwide. Left untreated, it may increase the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

The feature is supported on newer models, including the Apple Watch Series 9 and later devices, alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Users also need iOS 18 or later, plus at least 10 nights of tracked sleep data within a 30-day window.

AirPods Pro gain a clinical-grade hearing test

Apple is also bringing a built-in hearing test to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 in India. The feature uses pure-tone audiometry, the same standard approach commonly used in clinical hearing exams.

The test takes around five minutes and can be completed at home using compatible AirPods and an iPhone or iPad. Users hear a sequence of tones across different frequencies, after which the system generates a hearing profile for each ear. Results include an audiogram, hearing classification, and recommendations stored inside the Health app.

Apple says the hearing system was developed using large-scale real-world data collected through the Apple Hearing Study. The company also claims the feature underwent clinical validation before rollout.

That matters because hearing loss often develops gradually. Many users simply do not notice it until communication problems become obvious.

India was late to get these features

The bigger story here is timing.

Apple announced both capabilities in September 2024 for several international markets, including the US, Europe, and Japan. India was missing from the initial rollout, likely due to regulatory approvals tied to health-related software features.

The delayed launch highlights a recurring issue with advanced health functions on consumer devices. Hardware usually ships globally first, while medically adjacent software tools arrive market by market, depending on local certification requirements.

Still, India is an important expansion point for Apple’s healthcare ambitions. The company has been steadily growing its user base in the country, and wearable adoption continues to rise across premium segments. Features like sleep monitoring and hearing assessments could help Apple differentiate its ecosystem beyond cameras and processors.

The remaining question is whether Indian users will actually build habits around these tools. Sleep apnea detection only works if users consistently wear their watch overnight, while hearing tests depend on users proactively checking for a gradual hearing decline. Apple now has the infrastructure in place. Adoption is the next hurdle.
