We have been hearing a lot about a major upcoming update for Windows. Over the past few months, we have seen references and other leaks pointing towards this update. Earlier, there was some confusion about whether this will be an update to Windows 11 or the version will be upgraded to Windows 12.
Now, that is not a matter of debate anymore. That is because Microsoft has officially confirmed it to be an update for Windows 11, and the version will be updated to Windows 11 24H2.
Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 24H2 Will be Next Major Update
Microsoft published release notes for an Insider preview build of Windows 11 last week. The build here is 26052, to be specific, and is accessible by Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. In these notes, the tech giant announced Windows 11 24H2.
Under the General section of the Changes and Improvements, they mentioned that the Windows 11 version will be updated to 24H2 for all the builds starting with Build 26XXX. This is only for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. You can read the release notes here to learn more about this particular build. Also, if you want to check your Windows version, press the Windows button and the R key together. Once the Run dialogue box appears, type in ‘winver’ and hit Enter.
When Will This Update Arrive and What to Expect From It?
As per the release notes, Microsoft plans to roll out the Windows 11 24H2 update in the second half of 2024. The exact dates are yet to come out. On a related note, one more Windows update is coming up before this one. It will most likely be Windows 11 24H1. You can read about it here.
As for the details of the 24H2 update, we do not have the complete changelog. However, users can expect a few features with this update. First of all, features based on artificial intelligence are something Microsoft has been focusing on quite a lot, just like most other tech companies. Copilot, for instance, is going to be a lot better and more capable.
Moving on, other features may include a more powerful Command Prompt with the introduction of the sudo command. Some visual changes are also planned alongside some niche but useful features. Accessibility features are also likely going to see a lot of improvement. This and some big fixes will surely make a considerably significant update.
