Why RTX 40 and 30 Series Owners Should Not Get Too Excited About DLSS 5

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 is arriving with a major visual upgrade, but RTX 40 and RTX 30 series owners should temper expectations. The technology is officially limited to RTX 50 series GPUs, and early unofficial testing suggests there is a good reason older cards may struggle with it.

That matters because DLSS 5 is not simply another version of DLSS Super Resolution. Nvidia describes it as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, adding a much heavier neural-rendering workload on top of the technologies already used by DLSS.

DLSS 5 is arriving alongside increasingly aggressive frame generation

The performance problem becomes clearer when DLSS 5 is considered alongside Nvidia’s current frame-generation stack.

RTX 50 series GPUs support DLSS Multi Frame Generation, which can generate up to five additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame. Nvidia says this feature is powered by the fifth-generation Tensor Cores in Blackwell GPUs. RTX 40 series cards support regular DLSS Frame Generation, but not Multi Frame Generation. RTX 30 series cards lack both forms of Frame Generation.

That distinction is important.

DLSS 5 can consume substantial GPU resources on its own. Nvidia’s current DLSS lineup effectively pairs its newest neural-rendering features with the RTX 50 series’ ability to generate multiple frames, letting the GPU deliver a much higher output frame rate without rendering every frame traditionally.

Take away Multi Frame Generation and the economics change.

Modders have already demonstrated the problem

This isn’t purely theoretical anymore. Modders have managed to get leaked DLSS 5 components running on RTX 40 series hardware by replacing incompatible CUDA binaries with versions that work on Ada GPUs. An RTX 4080 was among the cards successfully tested.

The results should make older GPU owners cautious, not excited.

Unofficial testing has also pushed DLSS 5 onto RTX 30 series cards, with reports of performance falling into single-digit frame rates in some games. Even an RTX 3080 Ti reportedly managed only around 30–40 fps in selected cases, sometimes with Ultra Performance upscaling and a 720p internal resolution.

Those aren’t representative benchmarks for a finished, officially supported implementation. The software is still being modified, and optimization could improve.

But the direction is clear.

RTX 40 owners are in a better position, but that does not make DLSS 5 free

RTX 40 series owners have one significant advantage over RTX 30 owners: hardware Frame Generation.

An RTX 4070, 4080, or 4090 can already generate intermediate frames, while an RTX 30 card cannot. Nvidia also continues to support newer transformer models for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA across older RTX generations.

DLSS 5 is different.

Early testing has shown substantial performance costs even on RTX 50 hardware. One unofficial test reported an RTX 5070 Ti dropping from 71 fps to 35 fps with the DLSS 5 modification enabled in Control.

If a modern RTX 50 GPU can lose roughly half its frame rate to the added workload, expecting an RTX 40 or RTX 30 card to run DLSS 5 at comparable speeds would be unrealistic.

The visual upgrade might still be possible. The performance target is another question.

The bigger issue is what happens without Multi Frame Generation

This is where RTX 30 owners should be particularly skeptical.

An RTX 30 card cannot use Nvidia’s Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. An RTX 40 card can use Frame Generation, but not the multi-frame technology Nvidia reserves for RTX 50 series hardware.

So even if modders continue finding ways to make DLSS 5 run on older GPUs, those cards lack the same mechanism Nvidia uses to inflate the final displayed frame rate.

That doesn’t mean DLSS 5 will be completely useless on an RTX 40. It means the GPU has to pay the performance penalty much more directly.

For RTX 30 owners, the situation looks considerably less attractive.

DLSS 5 could eventually become an interesting modding experiment for older cards, but that is very different from getting the RTX 50 experience for free.

The more interesting question now is whether Nvidia can reduce DLSS 5’s processing cost enough for older architectures to use it in practice—or whether Multi Frame Generation and the RTX 50’s newer Tensor hardware will remain an important part of the performance equation.
