Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 with a major focus on health tracking. The new model adds a redesigned Health Sensing System, more frequent heart rate and heart-rate variability measurements, and a new Readiness score designed to help users understand how prepared their body is for the day.
The smartwatch also gets Apple’s new S11 chip, longer workout battery life, faster charging, new Apple Intelligence features, and a tougher display on aluminum models.
The main upgrade is health sensing
The Apple Watch Series 12 uses new optical and electrical heart sensors alongside the S11 chip. Apple says the combination delivers its most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable, based on a study involving more than 1,000 participants.
One of the clearest changes is how often the watch checks heart rate. The Series 12 can measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day using larger, power-efficient green LEDs.
Heart rate variability, or HRV, is also measured much more frequently — up to 24 times more often than before. Apple separates this into recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for broader health insights.
That extra data feeds into the watch’s new daytime and overnight vitals views.
Readiness turns health data into a simple score
Apple is also introducing Readiness, which turns several health and activity measurements into a single daily score from 0 to 10.

The score considers recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep. It then gives users a straightforward recommendation:
- Recover
- Pace Yourself
- Ready
- Go For It
The score can change during the day as new information arrives. A demanding workout or a change in daytime vitals can affect the recommendation.
For everyday users, this may be more useful than looking at individual health measurements. Instead of interpreting an HRV reading on its own, the Series 12 combines several signals and provides a simpler indication of how hard someone might want to push that day.
Battery life improves during workouts
Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours for everyday use, while outdoor workout battery life reaches 10 hours. Apple says that is 25 percent higher than the previous model.
Charging is faster as well. Apple says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 12 hours of additional battery life, a 50 percent improvement over the previous model.
Step tracking gets a machine-learning boost
The Series 12 also gets a redesigned pedometer model that uses machine-learning algorithms.
Apple says the changes improve distance measurements during indoor walking and running workouts, while the S11 chip enables more accurate step counting throughout the day. A new Steps complication also lets users see their count directly on the watch face.
These are smaller changes than the new health system, but they could matter to people who use their Apple Watch primarily for activity tracking.
Apple adds new AI features
The S11 chip enables a new group of Audio Intelligence features, although some will arrive later this year.
Sound Recognition can alert users to sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a crying baby without requiring the iPhone to be nearby.
Another feature, Live Rewind, can show the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text when the Digital Crown is double-pressed. Siri Recap can create a short summary of a conversation for later reference.
Apple says these features are designed with privacy in mind. Audio is processed using a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave, and the company says raw audio is not stored or accessible to Apple, apps, or the operating system.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap will arrive in beta later this year.
Design and durability
The Apple Watch Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes.
Aluminum models are available in dark bronze, black, light gold and space gray, while titanium models come in radiant gold and natural titanium. Apple is also offering a ceramic version in pearl white and night blue.
Aluminum models use Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass used on previous aluminum models.
US pricing and availability
For the US, Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $449.
Pre-orders are open now, with availability beginning September 18, 2026.
The biggest change with the Series 12 isn’t a radically different smartwatch design. Apple is putting more emphasis on what the watch can learn from continuous health data, particularly the combination of more frequent sensing and the new Readiness score.
For people who already use an Apple Watch for sleep, workouts, and daily activity, those changes could make the Series 12 more useful between workouts rather than simply during them.
