Xiaomi to Launch Selfie-Centric Smartphone in India on June 7; Could be Redmi S2

The smartphone is likely to be renamed Redmi Y2 in India

Earlier this month, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi launched the Redmi S2 in its home market (China), and now the company is gearing for the launch of the device in India. A was teaser launched today in Twitter confirming the launch date and venue. Though the teaser doesn’t mention the smartphone directly, it contained the tag “The Real You Smartphone is Coming” with the word ‘Y’ highlighted which hints that the Redmi S2 may be launched as the Redmi Y2 in India. Last year, the Redmi Y1 was launched as a selfie-centric smartphone in India 

Redmi S2 sports a 5.99-inch display with a resolution of HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) and 18:9 aspect ratio. It will be powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. It will be available in two storage variants: 3 GB RAM + 32 GB internal storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB internal storage.

In the optics department, the Redmi S2 offer a dual camera setup in the back consisting of 12 MP primary camera sensor and a 5 MP secondary camera sensor to sense depth and add bokeh effect on your photos. On the front, it offers a 5 MP camera sensor for selfies and video calling. The smartphone comes with an AI portrait mode and an AI beauty mode. The company claims its algorithm works better in distinguishing between background and object while the AI beauty mode makes a face more natural by highlighting the right areas.

It runs on MIUI 9 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo and is backed by a 3080 mAh battery. It also contains a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a micro USB connector. The smartphone measures 160.7 x 77.3 x 8.1 mm and weighs 170g. It is available in Rose gold, Champagne Gold and Platinum Silver colours.

The Redmi S2 will be launched in India on June 7 at New Delhi. The smartphone was launched at a price tag of CNY 999 (Rs 10,500 approx) for the 3GB variant while the higher 4GB variant costs CNY 1299 (Rs 13,500 approx). It will likely be priced at an attractive price of Rs 9999  and Rs13,000 in India where it will take on the likes of Honor 9 Lite.
