Xiaomi Launches Redmi 5 in Three Variants in India

The Redmi 5 is the slimmest Redmi smartphone ever and comes with three RAM options

Last month Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro full-screen design smartphones in India. Today the company has announced the launch of the Redmi 5 smartphone which is s cheaper variant but comes with the full-screen design. The smartphone was the first launch at China last year in December along with the Redmi 5 Plus smartphone. The Redmi 5 Plus was rebranded as Redmi Note 5 while the Redmi 5 will be launched with the same name in India.

The Redmi 5 sports a full metallic body measuring 151 x 72.8 x 7.7 mm and weighs 157 g making it the slimmest Redmi phone ever. For safeguarding, Xiaomi has reinforced the corners and also gives a free ultra-slim case with the smartphone. The smartphone offers four colour variants: Lake Blue, Gold, Black and Rose gold.

Coming to the specs, the Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of HD+ (720 x 1440 pixels). It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset. To maintain the internal temperature, the device comes with two layers of the pyrolytic sheet. It will be available in three memory variants: 2 GB RAM + 16 GB ROM, 3 GB RAM + 32 GB ROM and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB ROM. All the three variants have expandable memory options through a micro SD card.

The smartphone sports a 12 MP rear camera with a pixel size of 1.25 micron and comes with features like PDAF and LED Flash. The camera works very well in low light conditions. It offers a 5 MP front camera with a soft flash for video calling and low light selfies. It also includes Beatify 3.0 for enhancing selfies. It runs MIUI 9 that is built upon Android 7.0 Nougat. Like the Redmi Note 5, the handset will also receive full gestures function in the future. The device is backed by a 3,300 mAh battery that claims to deliver upto an impressive 17 hours of standby time.

The Redmi comes with a price tag of Rs 7,999 for the 2 GB RAM variant, Rs 8,999 for the 3 GB RAM variant and Rs 10,999 for the 4 GB RAM variant competing against the likes of Honor 9 Lite and Lenovo S5.  Users can get an instant cashback of Rs 2,200 on Reliance Jio along with 100 GB of data. SBI credit card owners can avail an additional cashback of 5 percent. Additionally, Redmi 5 buyers will be getting a massive discount of 90 percent on Kindle eBooks.

Dubbed as “Compact Powerhouse” in India for its upgraded design, display and specs, the smartphone will be exclusively available through Amazon India from March 20 and will also be available through Mi.com, Mi store app, Mi Home stores and other partnered offline retail stores throughout the country.
