Every smartphone maker is going after the “bezel-less” trend. While companies like Apple, LG, Samsung and even Vivo has launched their almost no bezel phones, Xiaomi has released its Mi Mix 2 which is one of the best smartphones to be launched this year.
Talking about the design, the look is absolutely gorgeous. The upper side and the sides have no bezel. There is a small bezel on the lower side to accommodate the front camera which gets pretty awkward while taking photos or video calling. The Mi Mix 2 comes with a large screen of 5.99-inch IPS LCD with 18:9 aspect ratio. Xiaomi claims a screen density of 403 ppi. The screen clarity and visuals are excellent with its Full HD+ (2160 x 1080) resolution. While comparing with its predecessor Mi Mix, the device feels a little smaller. But it also makes the device easy to hold with one hand. Even the corners are visibly rounded.
Xiaomi has opted a ceramic body for the device which creates a wide range of problems. First, it makes the phone more slippery. Secondly, it makes the phone very prone to damages. Because of any middle material the phone will likely crack if it lands on its corner. Not a very good choice for a device that is bezel-less and users will not like to put a cover on it.
The phone has a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 rear camera sensor with 1.25-micron pixels that boasts 4-axis optical stabilisation on the back along with a fingerprint sensor. The camera is protruded out and has a golden rim which a dust and fingerprint magnet. Same goes for the back of the phone. The back camera performs well with some new 4k video capture modes and optical stabilisation. The low-light images are also decent with the HDR capture helping with light exposure in dim environments. The camera app, however, is still the same. The front camera however disappoints. The phone has to be turned while taking a photo or in video calling which gets pretty awkward. Also, the range of the front cam is pretty narrow for which users have to stretch their hand for a wide view.
The terms of performance the device is a beast. With the combination of Snapdragon 835 Soc and 6 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, the device handles smoothly you throw anything at. The games perform well and also is able to go toe to toe with the Samsung Galaxy S8 which is available at twice its size. The device runs MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. This time we get Google Play Services pre-installed on the device which was not available on its predecessor. Sound quality is pretty good thanks to its new earpiece speaker which allows the user to hear any part of the screen or frame. However, we are stuck with USB Type-C adapter as there is no 3.5mm headphone jack. The device is backed up by a 3400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The battery performs well considering its large and bright screen.
In India, Xiaomi has launched only the 6GB RAM(128 GB memory) variant whereas the 8GB RAM variant is available in some countries. The Mi Mix 2 is priced at Rs 35,999.It will be available in Mi.com, Flipkart, all Mi Home stores, Mi Preferred Partner stores, and Large Format Retail Partners from the first week of November. The phone will also be available for a flash sale at Mi.com and Flipkart at noon on October 17.
