Vivo’s Mid Range 5G Phone to Launch by Year End with Exynos 980 SoC

Vivo launched the Vivo iQOO Pro 5G edition earlier this month. It was one of the first 5G phones from Vivo. Currently, only Snapdragon 855 devices, and some phones with the Snapdragon 845 and an additional 5G modem chips, are listed as 5G phones. But Vivo, in collaboration with Samsung, is launching a new mid-range 5G phone. Getting a Snapdragon 855 or 855 plus device can burn a hole in your pocket, but a 5G phone at a low budget can be an absolute blockbuster from Vivo. The chip we are referring to here is the Samsung Exynos 980 chip, which has an integrated 5G modem chip configuration.

This new mid-range 5G Vivo phone might end up being the first device powered by the Samsung Exynos 980. There is no news about an official date, but Vivo says that we will have this device available in the market for the end consumers by the end of this year. This will be an 8nm chip running on eight cores, two Cortex-A77 cores, and six Cortex-A55 cores, along with Mali-G76 MP5 GPU and an NPU. So it has all the latest along with 5G connectivity. What more can a mid-range Samsung user ask for?

This processor is also capable of providing a combined 4G+5G speed up to 3.55 Gbps. Individually, you can expect a speed of 2.55 Gbps.

Now, Snapdragon will stay silent on this. They are developing 6 and 7-series Snapdragon processors now, which will be reasonably priced but will also offer 5G connectivity. Brian Shen, VP of Oppo, has already stated that they will be the first ones to have a 5G-supported Snapdragon 6 or 7 series chip. Currently, we only know about the Snapdragon 7250 launching later this year, which will be the first in the 7 series of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors to support 5G connectivity.

But Vivo could not wait for Qualcomm and went straight ahead to Samsung to develop one of the cheapest 5G phones. Recently, Moto opted for an Exynos chip. So, we can expect other brands to develop a budget-friendly smartphone.

We don’t know the launch date of this upcoming Vivo 5G phone; we only know that it will launch before the end of this year.
