Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 and MediaTek Helio G80 were launched in early 2020. Both processors are great competitors and are housed in entry-level and mid-range smartphones. Manufactured with powerful CPU and GPU units, both processors deliver outstanding performance while consuming less power. The Snapdragon 662 is housed in the Moto G9, already launched in the Indian market. Moreover, the Oppo F17, Oppo A73, and Galaxy Tab A7 will also be powered by the Snapdragon 662. At the same time, the Helio G80 processor is housed in the Realme Narzo 10 and Redmi 9 Prime smartphones. In this article, we have made a raw comparison of both processors, considering the pros and cons.
Snapdragon 662 vs Helio G80 Comparison
The Snapdragon 662 processor is built on 11nm LPP Process Technology, while the MediaTek Helio G80 has been fabricated on 12nm FinFET Process Technology. So, there is no major difference if we consider the manufacturing process of both processors. Still, a slight improvement in efficiency is observed on the Snapdragon 662 compared to the Helio G80.
The Snapdragon 662 chip is an octa-core processor manufactured with four ARM Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.0 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A53, which is also clocked at 2.0 GHz. The Helio G80 processor is an octa-core chip with two ARM Cortex-A75 clocked at 2.0 GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 showing clock speed of 1.8 GHz. We can see that both SoCs have been assigned to run at a maximum clock speed of 2.0 GHz, but the Helio G80 has the latest CPU than the Snapdragon 662. The Cortex-A75 brings a 20% performance increase over the A73. With Cortex-A55, we see an 18% increase in performance compared to the A53. Hence, the Helio G80 will give slightly improved performance than the Snapdragon 662, mainly in gaming.
Snapdragon 662 has the Adreno 610 GPU, while the Helio G80 has the ARM-Mali G52 MP2. Both GPUs are assigned to run at a maximum frequency of 950 MHz. Regarding GPU, according to Notebookcheck’s test, the Mali G52 MP2 has shown a 24% faster graphics rendering speed than the Adreno 610. Hence, we can conclude that the Helio G80 has a better GPU unit than the Snapdragon 662, resulting in better visuals and graphics quality.
In the Snapdragon 662, the dual camera supports up to 16MP. The single-camera sensor supports up to 48MP with 30fps. Similarly, the Helio G80 has dual camera supports up to 16MP. The primary camera supports up to 48MP. So it’s a tie between both the processors in case of photo capture quality. But when it comes to video capture format, the Helio G80 wins here. The Helio G80 supports 2K QHD format at 30fps and 1080p format at 60fps, while the Snapdragon 662 supports only 1080p video format at 60fps.
Both the processor supports Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2520 X 1080 pixels. Moreover, the display refresh rate in both processors is also the same, which is 60Hz. Therefore, it’s a tie between the Helio G80 and Snapdragon 662 processor regarding Display.
The Snapdragon 662 has the Qualcomm X11 LTE modem, which supports dual LTE standby. The maximum download speed in the Snapdragon 662 processor is 390Mbps, while the maximum upload speed is 150Mbps. Whereas in the Helio G80 processor, the maximum download speed is up to 300Mbps, and the maximum upload speed is 150Mbps. The Helio G80 processor supports dual LTE standby, too. Hence, in terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon 662 gets the point.
Which one is a better chipset?
Talking about Geekbench v5 scores, Snapdragon 662-powered Moto G9 Play has scored 313 points in the single-core test, while in the multi-core test, it has managed to get 1370 points. On the other hand, Helio G80-powered Realme Narzo 10 has achieved a single-core score of 384 points and a multi-core scores of 1334 points.
In the single-core test, the Helio G80 is the winner, while in the multi-core test, the Snapdragon 662 beats the Helio G80. So, going by its benchmark scores, we can’t choose a winner. These scores don’t show the real-world usage capabilities of both the chipsets.
