South Korean manufacturer Samsung was long rumored to be working on an in-display fingerprint sensor and even filed a couple of patents for it. After Vivo launched the first smartphone with an under-display fingerprint sensor, it looks like Samsung will also launch the same this year. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the higher variant of the S9 series, will be getting this feature.
The company is developing the technology independently and is unwilling to take help from third-party sources like Synaptics, who developed the Vivo X20 fingerprint sensor. Hence, it’s taking more time and also increases research costs. But in the long run, Samsung may gain profit by lending this technology to other smartphone manufacturers, a strategy we have seen before.
This information is from one of the images attached to Samsung’s patents, which show a design sketch that looks like the future S9 smartphone. Though the handset’s design is claimed to be just a reference and not representative of the Galaxy Note 9 or any other smartphones from other manufacturers, we know otherwise. Samsung has been trying to incorporate this technology since developing the Galaxy S8 series.
It’s confirmed that this technology will not be included in the Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus smartphones scheduled to be launched in the upcoming weeks. Though it was previously rumored that the smartphones would sport a new display called “Y-OCTA display” or “Youm On-Cell Touch AMOLED,” we are sure these smartphones will miss this technology.
The Galaxy Note 9 will be similar to the S9 and the S9 in terms of design and performance but will include its signature S Pen, a couple of stylus-based features, and the new under-display fingerprint sensor. The smartphone is speculated to be unveiled in late August or early September at IFA 2018.
