Samsung adopts two different chips for a smartphone for its higher-end smartphones. Take the Galaxy S8, for example; the Chinese and North American variants have the Qualcomm 835 chipset, while the international variant has Samsung’s Exynos 8895. Samsung will likely apply the same in the coming Galaxy S9. So, a new chipset launch was expected, and Samsung has made its Exynos 9810 official in a Non-official way.
The Samsung Exynos 9810 is a second-generation SoC in the Exynos 9 series and is the successor of the Exynos 8895, which powers the Galaxy S8 and the Note 8. The processor is also the first with 3rd-generation custom CPU cores and will pack a gigabit LTE modem with ‘industry-first’ support for 6CA, which means it can combine six carrier signals for speeds up to 1.2 Gbps keeping in mind the upcoming 5G era. The device will be manufactured in a 2nd generation 10 nm process.
Samsung recently won 36 awards for its devices at the CES 2018 Innovation Awards, which includes one for the new Exynos 9810 chipset. From there, we know the details of the processor. Samsung claims that the Exynos 9810 has an upgraded GPU, which will likely be a Mali GPU, as Samsung has already used the Exynos 8895 featured a Mali-G71MP20.
It’s not precisely how powerful the Exynos 9810 will be compared to its predecessors. The 2016 Exynos 8 octa (8890) was built on a 14 nm FinFET LPP process and features custom CPU cores in Exynos M1. The per-core processing power was a lot more than the ARM Cortex A72. Then, in 2017, came the 2nd generation Exynos M2 cores. The upcoming Exynos 9810 is expected to have more core design and maybe even a neural AI unit implemented by its competitors Huawei and Apple in their flagships.
There is no explicit mention of the power efficiency or processing stats, which will likely be revealed at CES 2018 in January. Then only we can compare it to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Samsung also recently got Bluetooth certification for their new Exynos 7872. The company also showed off the ISOCELL Slim 2X7, a camera sensor announced earlier in 2017. The camera contains a 24 MP image sensor with 0.9 μm pixels, the smallest pixel size in the industry, having proprietary Tetra cell and remosaic technology, which emulates the performance of bigger pixel image sensors.
