Flagship smartphones have been getting more expensive, and a big part of that is the silicon inside them. Each new Snapdragon generation has pushed performance higher—and pricing along with it.
That pattern may be shifting.
A post from Digital Chat Station on Weibo outlines a more layered Snapdragon 8E5 lineup, with Qualcomm reportedly preparing multiple variants of the same flagship chip. The goal is straightforward: give phone makers more flexibility in costs without resorting to older hardware.
This time, “flagship” doesn’t mean just one chip.
Four versions of Snapdragon 8E5 are coming
According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8E5 (SM8850 series) will be available in at least four distinct versions, each tuned for a different device tier.
At the lower end is the SM8850-5-AC, a 7-core variant already seen in the Oppo Find N6. Cutting a core is a direct way to reduce manufacturing cost and power draw, while keeping most of the flagship architecture intact.
The standard SM8850-AC sits in the middle as the default flagship option. This is likely what most high-end phones will use.
Above that is the SM8850-1-AD, a higher-frequency version designed for peak performance. It’s expected to power devices like the Galaxy S26 series, Fold8 models, and Red Magic 11S gaming phones—hardware that typically prioritizes raw speed over efficiency.
A fourth variant, SM8850-1-AB, is expected later this year. Early Geekbench 6 estimates put it around 3,600 single-core and 11,300 multi-core scores, which land very close to the standard version.
That’s the interesting part.
Near-flagship performance without the full flagship cost
Those benchmark figures suggest the “cheaper” 8E5 variant isn’t dramatically slower.
In practical terms, a ~3,600 single-core score means fast app launches, responsive UI, and strong camera processing. Multi-core performance at ~11,300 keeps it competitive in gaming and multitasking.
For most users, the gap between this and the full-fat version may be hard to notice.
Instead of a clear step down, this looks more like a slight trim.
A shift in how flagship chips are sold
Qualcomm has traditionally separated its lineup into clear tiers—flagship, then a step down, then mid-range. The 8E5 family changes that by slicing the flagship tier itself into multiple levels.
That creates room for manufacturers to fine-tune pricing.
A phone can still advertise a current-generation Snapdragon chip, but use a slightly lower version to keep costs down. At the same time, premium models can push higher-frequency bins for better performance.
It’s a more flexible approach. And arguably overdue.
What it means for buyers
The leak points to these chips targeting devices around the “4K price point,” a common benchmark for mid-premium phones in China. That suggests newer silicon could start appearing in more affordable flagships sooner than expected.
Prices may not drop outright. But the value could improve.
Instead of paying more each year for incremental gains, buyers might start getting newer chips at lower tiers—something that hasn’t happened consistently in recent cycles.
Whether that translates globally is still unclear. But if Qualcomm’s segmentation works as intended, the next wave of flagship phones may feel less like a price hike—and more like a reshuffle.
