Pixel March update appears to trigger widespread battery drain across multiple models

Reports of abnormal battery drain on Google Pixel phones are mounting following the March 2026 Pixel Drop. Users across forums and social platforms describe a sharp decline in battery life that persists even after installing the April 2026 update, which appears not to address the issue.

The complaints span both new and older devices. Most frequently cited are the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series, though similar behavior is being reported on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 lineup, including A-series variants. The pattern is consistent. Devices that previously lasted a full day now require multiple charges.

Battery drain hits idle performance

The defining characteristic of this issue is how it affects idle usage. Users say battery loss continues even when the phone is not actively being used, suggesting background processes are not behaving as expected.

In real-world terms, some devices that previously delivered around 16 hours of use are now dropping closer to 12. Others report needing two to three charges per day under similar usage patterns.

That points to a systemic problem rather than isolated hardware degradation.

Possible link to GPS and power management

While there is no official explanation, the most widely discussed theory centers on a GPS or GNSS-related bug introduced in the March update. The suspicion is that location services may be preventing the CPU from entering Android’s low-power “Doze” state.

If accurate, this would explain the symptoms. A device unable to properly idle would keep background processes active, leading to sustained power draw even when the screen is off.

This remains unconfirmed. But the consistency across models gives the theory weight.

Update introduced other instability

Battery drain is not the only complaint tied to the recent software rollout. Some users report changes to charging optimization behavior, with phones no longer following expected adaptive charging patterns.

A smaller subset of users has also encountered boot loop issues following the update, suggesting broader instability within the current firmware build.

No official response yet

Google has not publicly acknowledged the battery drain issue at the time of writing. The April update, which many expected would contain a fix, did not resolve the problem based on user feedback.

That leaves affected users with limited options. Some have attempted workarounds such as disabling location services or restricting background activity, though results vary.
