MIUI 14 for MI 10 series

Xiaomi Mi 10 and 10 Pro MIUI 14 (Android 13) Update Status

Google released Android 13 a few months back in August, and since then, every company has started releasing new versions of their custom Android skins based on Android 13. A tad bit late to the party, Xiaomi has released their own MIUI 14 today, based on Android 13. On the 11th of December 2022, we saw MIUI 14 and the Xiaomi 13 series launch.

MI 10 Series Confirmed to Get MIUI 14

On the 28th of November, the director of Xiaomi’s System Software Department, Zhang Guoquan, confirmed that the MI 10 series would indeed receive the MIUI 14 update. In reply to a comment on Weibo, he confirmed this. However, the exact models were not stated in the response.

The MI 10 series comprises five phones: MI 10, MI 10 Pro, MI 10 Lite, MI 10 Lite Zoom, and MI 10 Ultra. All these models, except the MI 10 Ultra, were launched with MIUI 11. The MI 10 Ultra, however, came out with MIUI 12.5. All of them ran Android 10 initially. Over the last two years, they have been updated to newer versions of MIUI, along with several security patch updates. The latest is MIUI 13. MIUI 14 will be the third major software update for these devices (excluding the MI 10 Ultra).

Will the Mi 10 Series get an Android 13 update?

It looks like the Mi 10 series may be upgraded to the latest Android version, Android 13, along with this update. Zhang Guoquan, director of Xiaomi’s System Software Department, confirms the Mi 10 series will receive Android 13-based MIUI 14. It should be noted the update will be only available for the Snapdragon 865-powered MI 10 series. So, Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and Mi 10 Ultra are eligible for Android 13.

Earlier, it was expected that they might receive MIUI 14 based on the Android 12 build. This is because they do not fall under the latest update policy Xiaomi introduced for their newer models.

What to expect with the MIUI 14 Global Version?

MIUI 14 will, of course, be based on Android 13 for all devices that support it. Some devices may get the MIUI 14 update without Android 13, just like some devices got MIUI 13 without Android 12 this year.

Interestingly, the global version of MIUI will reportedly be almost the same as the Chinese version. If this is true, it is great news since there has constantly been a day and night difference between the Global ROM and Chinese ROM throughout the years.

MIUI 14 brings a major overhaul in how Xiaomi’s custom software skin looks. We see what Xiaomi calls ‘Super Icons,’ allowing users to customize how their app icons look. Moreover, there would be new customizable widgets and large folders, too.

In addition, MIUI 14 is a card-style user interface with better animations than the previous generations.

This is what Xiaomi’s MIUI has been infamous for over the past few years. Numerous bloatware, ads, and unnecessary recommendations have not particularly impressed its user base. Though they are pretty easy to get rid of, they are undeniably annoying. This year, it is said that Xiaomi has reduced such things by a considerable amount. MIUI 14 has as few as eight uninstallable system apps.

As per Xiaomi, MIUI 14 focuses on providing users with a clean software experience with enhanced performance. Third-party apps have also been optimized. Fluency is said to have increased by as much as 88%, while power consumption by third-party apps has been reduced by 16%.

Users would get the standard Android 13 features, some add-ons by Xiaomi, and a better ecosystem. Besides, it would probably be more focused on privacy and security. MIUI 14 seems promising, and we hope Xiaomi delivers it properly with minimal issues.
