MediaTek recently announced their new flagship chipset – the MediaTek Dimensity 8100. This chipset is a successor to the powerful Dimensity 8000. For instance, this chipset sits somewhere between the Snapdragon 870 and the Snapdragon 888. The Dimensity 8100 is built on TSMC N5 5nm fabrication process, which is better than Samsung’s. The Dimensity 8100 brings 20% better GPU frequency over the Dimensity 8000 and over 25% better CPU power efficiency over previous generation Dimensity chips.
MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Features
The MediaTek Dimensity 8100 has four cores, Cortex-A78 at 2850 MHz frequency and four cores Cortex-A55 at 2000 MHz frequency. Complementing the CPU is the Mali-G610 MC6 GPU which offers 20% better GPU performance over the Dimensity 8000. This should result in smooth and high FPS gaming. The flagship chipset is also 20% more power-efficient than other similar chips, allowing you to play for longer hours on a single charge.
The Octa-core CPU with 4x Arm Cortex-A78’s speed can be boosted up to 2.85GHz. The flagship processor also supports LPDDR5 Memory (6400Mbps maximum frequency) and UFS 3.1 storage type. It can shoot and play videos up to 4K at 60FPS. It is also 5G equipped and supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.
One AnTuTu 9, the Dimensity 8100, scores 822K, close to the Snapdragon 888’s 804K. The Dimensity 8100, however, should perform better and more efficiently as it is built on TSMC’s 5nm fabrication process. The Snapdragon 888 has several issues related to heating and power efficiency. For instance, the Xiaomi Redmi K50 with the Dimensity 8100 was the only smartphone to come close in battery life to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
On GeekBench 5, the Dimensity 8100 scores 921 in single-core and 3773 in multi-core. The Snapdragon 888 beat the Dimensity 8100 in single-core by 21% but lost to it in multi-core by 3%.
