Samsung has outlined key additions coming with One UI 8.5, with the update centered around AI-powered productivity, interface refinements, and tighter privacy protections across Galaxy devices.
The update appears to build on Samsung’s recent push toward more integrated on-device AI experiences. Rather than introducing entirely new feature categories, One UI 8.5 focuses on refining existing tools and making daily interactions feel more fluid.
AI sits at the center of the update
One UI 8.5 introduces an upgraded version of Photo Assist, Samsung’s AI-driven editing suite that simplifies complex edits. The company says the feature now delivers smarter photo editing capabilities, though detailed technical changes have not yet been disclosed.
Samsung is also adding a feature called Now Nudge, which appears to be aimed at creating a more context-aware and responsive AI experience across the interface. One UI 8.5 leans more heavily on proactive suggestions and personalized interactions, in line with broader trends across Android skins in 2026.
The broader goal is clear: reduce friction during everyday tasks.
Also, One UI 8.5 expands Samsung’s cross-platform sharing experience by improving Quick Share compatibility with Apple devices through AirDrop-style transfers. While Android and iOS still operate on separate ecosystems, the updated implementation makes file sharing between Galaxy phones and Apple hardware more seamless than before. Reducing one of the long-standing frustrations for users who regularly switch between Android and Apple devices, especially when transferring photos, videos, or documents across platforms.
Interface changes focus on usability
Outside AI, Samsung is refreshing parts of the user interface with redesigned navigation bars and menus. According to the company, the changes provide a wider view of the screen alongside a smoother overall experience.
That means Samsung is trimming unnecessary visual clutter while improving spacing and gesture responsiveness. Navigation bars remain among the most frequently used elements in Android, so even minor refinements can noticeably improve day-to-day usability.
Samsung has steadily shifted toward cleaner and more minimal UI layouts over the past few One UI generations. One UI 8.5 seems to continue that direction rather than introducing a dramatic visual overhaul.
The update helps improve consistency across foldables, tablets, and standard Galaxy phones, an area Samsung has increasingly prioritized as its ecosystem expands.
Samsung doubles down on privacy and device security
Privacy and security form the third major pillar of One UI 8.5.
Samsung says the update strengthens protection through Samsung Knox, its hardware-based security platform already used across Galaxy devices. Knox remains one of Samsung’s biggest differentiators in the Android space, especially for security-conscious users.
One UI 8.5 also introduces Privacy Display and Privacy Alerts.
That aligns with the wider Android ecosystem, where privacy transparency has become increasingly important over the last few years.
The timing of One UI 8.5 is also interesting. Smartphone software updates are no longer judged purely on visual changes or performance gains. AI integration, cross-device consistency, and privacy safeguards now play a much larger role in how users evaluate an operating system update.
