The new OTA update brings new features along with the most update security patch.
HMD Global is very active in rolling updates for its previous smartphones. The company earlier launch Android 8.0 Oreo update for Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 2.Today the company has launched Android 8.1 Oreo Beta update to its flagship smartphone, the Nokia 8 through the company’s software beta program- Nokia Phones Beta Lab.
If the user is already a member of the Beta Labs Program, they just have to log on the website with their ID and request for the Android 8.1 Oreo OTA update. If not the user has to register for the Beta Labs program first and request for the OTA update manually. The new update has build number V4.82A and is around 1553.9MB in size. The updating process will take around 15 mins depending on the speed of the internet speed.
The download process is automatic after downloading the update from Noki8a server. It installs in the background and after completing it just need to reboot the smartphone for the download process to complete. The Nokia 8 comes with stock Android which is one of the top reasons why this upgrade came to a lot earlier being a non-Google phone.
This Android 8.1 Oreo update brings a new power menu which looks like it’s inspired by Google Pixel 2 style menu. Also, the settings menu is upgraded. As for the security, the update contains the January 2018 security patches.
Being a beta update, this version is likely to carry a lot of bugs and visual problems. This is not a reason to worry because the user can head back to the previous Android 8.0 Oreo update by heading over to the previous Nokia Phones Beta Labs page and request a rollback OTA update. Nokia 8 was among the first to get this update and is pretty stable. However, as a precautionary measure, it is advisable to back up all the data.
HMD Global has impressed us with their quick updates. We expect the same for the other smartphones in their portfolio.
