Xiaomi MIX 4's UWB tech

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 UWB (Ultra Wide Band) Technology: Here’s How it Works

Since its release, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 has attracted much interest as Xiaomi’s first under-screen camera flagship. Xiaomi MIX 4 is Xiaomi’s first phone featuring UWB (Ultra Wide Band) one-finger connection technology, and it comes with a gorgeous CUP full-screen display after three years. Its under-display camera is barely noticeable in any condition.

Xiaomi UWB (Ultra Wide Band) One Finger Link has already made its way into mass manufacturing on the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 less than a year after its first debut. What are the benefits of UWB technology over standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-based signal strength-based positioning? And how is this accomplished? In this regard, Xiaomi’s official website published a UWB (Ultra Wide Band) technological science today. The official report answers most users’ questions and explains the science behind it.

The phone points to the TV to bring up the operational interface when used with the Xiaomi TV Master 77′′ OLED or Xiaomi One Finger Connect Companion. Ultra-wideband, unlike other wireless technologies, operates over a large frequency range of 6-8.5 GHz, and its signal is represented in the temporal domain as a nanosecond-long pulse.

It has three advantages because of its ultra-short pulse. Here are the three major points of it.

  1. The UWB receiver can distinguish UWB pulses from noisy signal noise due to their different properties, even if their signal strength is weaker than the background noise. This allows UWB to use lower transmit power, often up to 30dBm lower than Wi-Fi signals, lowering power consumption while allowing UWB signals to blend in with what other communication technologies refer to as “background noise” and producing minimal interference. A result of this is that the MIX 4’s UWB one-finger connection doesn’t interfere with the regular operation of radio frequencies like Wi-Fi and 5G.
  2. UWB receivers are more resistant to multipath because the pulse is so brief that echoes that bounce off walls and roofs emerge after the pulse stops. The Time of Flight of the UWB pulse may now be used for precise ranging. This means that Xiaomi MIX 4 can efficiently filter nearby devices, such as activating just AIoT devices nearest to the user, with an inaccuracy of only 20cm within a range of 10 meters.
  3. Besides 1D ToF ranging, UWB can also accomplish 2D location via triangulation by employing two receiving antennas. As a result of MIX 4 having three receiving antennas, it can conduct 3D positioning of IoT devices, provide polar coordinates for upper-layer applications, and precisely detect which IoT device the user is pointing at, making “One Finger Connection” possible in under 20ms.

It is necessary to factory tune all three UWB antennas of each MIX 4 to correctly find IoT devices to enable future capabilities like in-pocket sensorless unlocking; the Xiaomi MIX 4 includes an extra transmitting antenna on its side. Other possible uses include unattended authentication for things like vehicle keys, door locks, or hotel cards; short-range location for things like mall navigation or online automobile search; and augmented reality (AR) situations.
