Vivo launched the world’s first smartphone with the on-screen fingerprint sensor, the Vivo X20 Plus and after that, not a single manufacturer yet has come up with its own under-display fingerprint sensor. The expected smartphone manufacturers are Samsung and Apple, but they have not confirmed anything yet. So we are now left with the Chinese ones and it looks like the next in line will be Meizu.
Meizu is the new player to join the list of companies that have filed an on-screen fingerprint sensor. The company has filed a patent to SIPO, the State Intellectual Property Office of China. The document reveals the scanner will be multitasking and will enable cashless payment along with unlocking the phone.
The patent was granted almost a year ago in April 2017 but is published only this week. The document says the fingerprint scanner will be implemented under the mBack button that was recently introduced with the Meizu M6s.
Since the patent was filed a year ago, we can assume the company has already made it to the prototype stage, and we can expect it to be unveiled at Q3 2018. The company which is known for introducing unusual features like second display and multi-LED flash, it will be interesting to see what the company offers this time.
About other rivals, Samsung has already filed a patent for an under-display fingerprint sensor long ago and was rumoured to sport this Galaxy S8 series. As it was not included even in the S9 series, it is expected to feature it in Galaxy Note 9 to be launched at the end of this year. As for Apple, they are not yet ready to ditch the Face Unlock which works so perfectly.
