Dimensity 820 Vs Snapdragon 765G

MediaTek Dimensity 820 Vs Snapdragon 765G: Which One is Better?

With the launch of MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC now, consumers will have another low-cost option in 5G capable chipset. This new chipset from MediaTek looks pretty similar to Snapdragon’s 765G SoC; also, both of them are 5G capable SoC, so we are going to see which one is better and in what field. Also, I want to clarify whether we are comparing or talking about these two SoCs together because of their price point. Dimensity 820 is comparable with Snapdragon 768G, but the price point is different, so we are choosing 765G instead. So, without wasting any more of your time, let’s go straight to the comparison.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 Vs Snapdragon 765G Comparison

Manufacturing Process:

In the manufacturing process, Dimensity 820 uses TSMC’s 7nm fabrication process, and Snapdragon 765G uses Samsung’s 7nm fabrication process. So here, both SoCs are equal, and due to their 7mm manufacturing node, both SoCs are quite power-efficient.

CPU:

In the CPU field, Dimensity 820 has chosen to go for speed, whereas Snapdragon 765G has chosen the opposite path of power efficiency with speed.

Both processors have eight cores in it. But the difference comes with the core clock speed and arrangement. MediaTek has chosen a dual-cluster arrangement for Dimensity 820, whereas Snapdragon 765G has gone for a tri-cluster arrangement.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 comes with 4 Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6 GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz. At the same time, Snapdragon 765G comes with 1 Kryo 475 (Cortex A-76 based) core at 2.4 GHz, 1 Kryo 475 (Cortex A-76 based) core at 2.2 GHz, and 6 Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz.

So we can see that the Dimensity 820 has gone for more horsepower, whereas the Snapdragon 765G has chosen a somewhat moderate path with power efficiency and speed.

Now, nobody can say which CPU is better; it depends on what you are looking for; if you are looking for more speed and battery drain is not a huge issue for you, then Dimensity 820 is for you, and if battery life is also important for you than I would recommend Snapdragon 765G to you.

GPU:

Dimensity 820 comes with 5 5-core versions of ARM Mali G57 GPU, which is better compared to Snapdragon 765 G’s Adreno 620 GPU. With the GPU benchmarking number we have seen so far about the Dimensity 820, I can say that for gaming, the Dimensity 820 will be a better choice compared to the Snapdragon 765G.

Display:

Dimensity 820 supports a 120Hz refresh rate, and the max supported resolution is 2520 x 1080, whereas Snapdragon 765G also supports a 120Hz refresh rate, and the max supported resolution is 3200 x 1800. So we can say display support is very slightly better in Snapdragon 765G but doesn’t have any significant advantage over Dimensity 820.

AI:

Dimensity 820 uses MediaTek APU 3.0, like Dimensity 800. So we can say Snapdragon 765 G’s AI Engine is far better compared to Dimensity 820’s MediaTek APU 3.0. MediaTek APU 3.0 can perform up to 2.4 TOPs AI performance, whereas the Snapdragon 765G AI Engine can perform up to 5.5 TOPs AI performance.

ISP:

With Imagiq 5.0, ISP Dimensity 820 can support a single camera of up to 80MP or a dual camera of 32MP+16MP. Also, Dimensity 820’s ISP can support four concurrent cameras. Whereas Spectra 355 ISP in the 765G SoC supports a single camera up to 192MP and a dual camera up to 22MP with ZSL.

Connectivity:

Dimensity 820 comes with an integrated 5G modem; it comes with support for SA (Standalone) and NSA (Non-Standalone) for Sub-6 GHz networks. It also supports dual SIM standby, DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing), and VoNR (Voice over New Radio) on both SIMs.

Whereas Snapdragon 765G comes with an X52 integrated modem. It also supports sub-6 GHz 5G, and it supports mmWave, which Dimensity 820 doesn’t support. Also, it supports DSS and TDD.

So, we can say both SoCs are adequate for the current market. We can give a few points to Qualcomm for supporting mmWave in Snapdragon 765G, but we don’t see mmWave implementation globally so far; all 5G carriers are currently working on the Sub-6 GHz section except a few.

Which One is Better?

By looking into the specs sheet of both chipsets, we can’t choose the winner. It looks like both SoCs can provide better performance, better gaming optimizations, better power management, and incredible 5G experiences. However, if we look at the benchmark scores, we find that the Dimensity 820 has an advantage over the Snapdragon 765G.

geekbench points of 820 765G

In the Geekbench 4.2 test, Dimensity 820’s CPU defeated Snapdragon 765 G’s CPU by 7 percent in single-core and 37 percent in multi-core. Also, On GFXBench Manhattan 3.0, we see Dimensity 820’s GPU has managed to score a 33% higher frame rate compared to Qualcomm’s 765G.

antutu points of 820 765G

Talking about Antutu scores, Dimensity 820 powered upcoming Redmi 10X 5G has scored overall 415277 points, placing MediaTek’s 820 at the top of the current 5G mid-range SoC’s table. On the other hand, Qualcomm’s 765G has managed to score 322826 points in Antutu.
