LG G7 ThinQ Launched with AI Cameras and “Boombox Speakers”

South Korean manufacturer LG officially announced the LG G7 ThinQ today at an event in New York. The smartphone is a successor to the LG G6, launched in February last year. It follows the ThinQ branding from the LG V30S ThinQ, an upgraded variant of the LG V30 launched at MWC 2018.

The LG G7 ThinQ features a metallic body with a glass back. It has an extra physical button under the volume rocker, which activates Google Assistant with one tap and Google Lens with two. The smartphone has IP68-rated protection and a Super Far Field voice recognition, detecting voices up to 5 meters away. The company claims to be the first smartphone to offer DTS:X that implements virtual 3D sound for all content.

As for the specs, the LG G7 ThinQ sports a 6.1-inch FullVision “SuperBright” LCD with a resolution of QHD+ (3120 x 1440) with a 19:5:9 aspect ratio and a brightness of 1000 nits. Under the hood, it is powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with an Adreno 630. It is offered in two variants: 4 GB RAM + 64 GB internal storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB internal storage for the G7+ ThinQ. Both variants provide expandable memory options of up to 2 TB with a microSD card slot.

In the optical department, the LG G7 ThinQ sports a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 16 MP standard-angle camera with f/1.6 aperture and a 16 MP wide-angle sensor with f/1.9 aperture. The dual cameras come equipped with “AI” features that analyze subjects in a photo and give tips on improving it. Some filters like Person, Flower, Landscape, Sky, Low light, and a “Super Bright Camera mode” help in low light photography. The Portrait Mode is available and can apply the Bokeh effect in real-time. The front offers an 8 MP camera for selfies and video calling.

The smartphone runs on LG UX 6.0 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo and is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, and a USB Type-C port. The smartphone also comes with a “Boombox Speaker,” which utilizes its internal space as a resonance chamber to amp up the base. The device has Face unlocking and a circular fingerprint sensor for added protection.

It is available in New Platinum Grey, New Aurora Black, New Moroccan Blue, and Raspberry Rose color variants. The smartphone will initially be launched in South Korea, followed by Asia, North America, Europe, and Latin America markets.
