Apple revolutionized smartphone design with the iPhone X in 2017. It had very slim bezels and an almost full-size screen, except for the notch. The notch houses Face ID, which is considered one of the fastest and safest forms of authentication on a smartphone- you can also use it for bank payments.
As the years passed, Apple eventually shrunk the size of the notch on the iPhone 13 series. With the iPhone 14 Pro models, Apple introduced a cutout on the display, called the Dynamic Island. The iPhone 15 finally added the new screen design; also to the base models.
As per a paid article from The Information, the iPhone 18 Pro might ship with an all-screen design. This is exactly in time for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. We don’t know what Apple will call this phone, they might jump a few numbers and call it the iPhone 20, similar to what they did with the iPhone X.
The iPhone X was a major display upgrade, and it was the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. We’re rapidly approaching two decades since the first-ever iPhone was unveiled. For the iPhone X, Apple curved the OLED panel at the bottom to create an even bottom bezel. The company also used an under-display Face ID system.
Naturally, the next step will be putting the Face ID components under the display. The Face ID consists of an infrared camera, a flood illuminator, a proximity sensor, and a dot projector. The module also consists of a microphone, a front camera, and more. Apple could hide the Face ID module behind the screen, and also use an under-display front camera to accomplish this.
As per recent reports, the iPhone 18 Pro series, which will launch in 2026, will feature a punch-hole style cutout for the front camera. Leaks say that Apple could place this cutout on the left of the phone. It could feature Under Display Face ID, which will hide all the components under the display, except for the front camera. At the moment, the technical capabilities of under-display front cameras are quite weak. Hopefully, Apple refines it before the launch of the iPhone 19 Pro models.
The sources state that at least one model will feature an edge-to-edge display, with no cutouts or intrusions. Dynamic Island will mostly continue as a software feature. Apple will mostly reserve this for the most high-end iPhone, or they could create a separate model alongside the iPhone 19 Pro and 19 Pro Max.
