iPhone 5G Support in India: Everything We Know So Far

5G technology was first announced during IMC (Indian Mobile Congress) 2022 on October 1 in the presence of the honorable Prime Minister of India, PM Narendra Modi. Since then, many smartphone manufacturers have started rolling out an update wherein they have enabled the 5G services for the users to get started with the first experience of the 5G technology. But, Apple has said they will give their iPhones a 5G software update in December 2022.

Apple to roll out a 5G software update in December in India:

Apple said we plan to launch a 5G software update in December 2022. “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users when network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” Apple said in a statement Wednesday.

Update December 13: Apple released iOS 16.2 official build on December 13, 2022. The software update brings Airtel 5G and Jio 5G network in India for iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 14 series, and iPhone SE (2022). If the 5G network is available in your area, you can now experience high-speed internet on your iPhone.

Update November 9: iOS 16.2 beta 2 adds 5G network support for iPhones in India for Airtel and Jio. Beta users in India with Jio or Airtel carriers can connect to 5G networks.

Update November 3: Apple will roll out iOS 16.2 beta 2 next week for developers and public beta testers. The Indian Express says the beta build will bring 5G support for iPhone users. So if you join the beta programme, you will be able to use Airtel 5G and Jio 5G services. If you do not want to install the beta version, you have to wait for the iOS 16.2 official version, which will likely release in mid-December 2022.

Why is Apple taking time to release a software update?

While telecommunication companies like Jio and Airtel have succeeded and launched the 5G services, smartphone manufacturers are testing how their devices perform with the given bands in India. They will try to fix the bugs and issues and ensure that the user experience is not affected. This is why the tech giant is taking time to release a software update and will release it in December. Also, Apple is excessively more particular regarding a consumer’s user experience than the other Android OEMs. That’s why they are taking time to release an effective update in December.

Apart from this, Airtel spoke to Indian Express last week, in which their Chief Technology Officer Randeep Sekhon said, “Apple is currently testing 5G in India, and the network has “set up special networks for them to test.” Most of the other handset manufacturers are already supporting the 5G services rolled out by Airtel.” To ensure a smooth experience for iPhone users, Apple is preparing for an absolute update to work effectively.

How do you know if your iPhone is using 5G technology or not?

Suppose you are in an area where you have required 5G plans on your device with the registered number and necessary 5G coverage is available within the range by the telecom carrier companies in your area. In that case, there will be a ‘5 G’ icon showing the activeness of your 5G network. This will indicate that you are currently linked with 5G technology.

Different 5G modes on your iPhones:

There are three modes available on your 5G-supported iPhones. If your iPhone supports 5G, three modes will help you use the technology efficiently. Here is the list of them:

  1. 5G Auto: If your 5G network is not providing you with the required speed, your iPhone will automatically switch to the LTE network, eventually saving battery life.
  2. 5G On: With the ‘5G On’ mode enabled, you will always be able to use only the 5G network when available. This mode is inefficient and will consume your device’s battery life comparatively.
  3. LTE: Irrespective of the 5G network and technology available, your device will only use LTE or 4G technology.

  1. Whether iPhone 10 & 10s will get a 5G network in the near future or never will be supported

  2. What is the point of buying mobile of over 70k plus where as 15k plus mobile phone of others brands are delivering 5g service. This is ridiculous for iphone user in India. Apple must compensate the customer for not enjoying luxury of 5g service till now.

  3. Apple is taking its users for a ride. I simply cannot believe that such a big entity will not be able to release 5G software before mid-December. It just amounts to arrogance on the part of Apple. If at all some issue is there, it can always be sorted out in the next update. Hope Apple releases the update immediately.

  4. I heard that Apple is going to release the ios16.1 on October 24. Then why should not the update for 5G connectivity in India also be released on the same day, since all the users of iphone 12 and after and iphone SE 2022 model are eagerly awaiting to experience the real benefit of buying the iphones and switching to 5g in India. However even if there found to be any bug, it can be subsequently set right in the forthcoming ios updates, as usual.
