iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max Model Number Differences

Apple, just like their previous generation iPhones, also went for multiple versions of the iPhone 11. There are three basic iPhone models: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, but all of them individually are launched as different versions. All these different versions have different bands, suitable only for certain regions for a specific model. If you plan to import a new iPhone from a different country to save money, you need to be aware of the version supported in your region. Apple went with this approach because their modem and antenna setup just don’t allow them to have all the bands necessary for worldwide support. This resulted in certain iPhones with support for the USA and Canada and certain others for the other regions.

What are the different iPhone 11 series models?

Specifically, one model, each iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and Pro Max, supports the US and Canadian carriers, which are iPhone 11 A2111, 11 Pro A2160, and 11 Pro Max A2161, respectively. Next, for the Chinese carriers, we have iPhone 11 A2223, 11 Pro A2217, and 11 Pro Max A2220. Finally, for the rest of the world, we have three other model versions, namely, iPhone 11 A2221, 11 Pro A2215, and 11 Pro Max A2218.

This is something you should be aware of if you plan to purchase a brand-new iPhone 11 from the Black market. Countries other than the United States are patched with a tax and base price. This bumps the price of the iPhone 11 Pro base model to $1,203 in Australia, $1,265 in Germany, and $1,385 in Russia. At the same time, the same device sold for $999 in states like Oregon and the United States. What happens is that foreigners visiting the US pick up a bunch of iPhone devices at their base prices and then sell them off with a nice profit margin in their own countries. This is illegal, though, but that has not stopped many people from doing it.

Why you should check these models before buying an iPhone 11?

If somebody purchases a device from another country/ region and the bands on that iPhone don’t support the country they are in, then all the money goes downhill. The US and Canadian models have frequency bands 14 and 17, and not the bands 11, 21, 28 and 32. This will make the network coverage of these devices in other countries almost close to nil.

Among the bands 11, 21, 28, and 32, band 28 is the most popular band, which covers many countries around Australia, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. 11 and 21 bands are for Japan. Band 32 is just a supplementary band that provides high-speed coverage in certain parts of Europe. Devices having these bands will provide really limited speed on US soil, and moving to the future limited speed is not what we are looking for in our future devices.

The good thing about staying in India in this scenario is the fact that both the global and US version has bands 1, 5, 40, and 41, which works fine in India. So anyone from India planning to buy an iPhone 11 from the US can do so without worrying about the coverage.

Again, for the Exclusive Chinese version, the band layout is just like the US model. The Chinese model has two physical nano-Sim slots, while the US variant has one nano-Sim and one eSIM variant.

So beware of the version you are purchasing if you have any plans of getting the new iPhone 11. Make sure the one that you are purchasing supports the frequency coverage of your country’s carriers.
