HMD Global Confirms Nokia 2 to Get Android 8.1 Oreo Update

HMD Global is very active in launching updates for its Nokia Android smartphones. After Nokia 8, Nokia 6, and Nokia 5, the company is now gearing up for the Android 8.0 Oreo update for their Nokia 2 smartphone. The smartphone was launched this year in October in India.

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer of HMD Global, recently confirmed on his Twitter handle that the Nokia 2 will receive an Android 8.1 Oreo upgrade soon. Also, HMD Global has revealed that the update will come with Android GO (Oreo Edition) memory management features. Recently, it was reported that the Nokia 1 might be the first Nokia smartphone to launch under Google’s Android Go program. Google initiated this program to provide an Android experience for low-budget smartphones.

It’s interesting to see the company skipping the Android 8.0 Update and directly going to the latest Android 8.1 Oreo update. The Nokia 2 is an entry-level smartphone with minimal specs. Android Go’s memory management features will optimize the device’s performance. Juho  Sarvikas mentions users cannot directly upgrade to the  Android Go program, but it will incorporate improvements based on Android 8.1 Oreo in the maintenance releases.

The Nokia 2 sports a 5-inch display with HD(1280 x 720 pixels) resolution. It is powered by a Quad-Core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz, with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage. It first shipped with Android 7.0 Nougat and is backed by a 4100 mAh battery that claims two days of battery life on a single charge. It also came with Google Assistant.

This Android 8.1 update is expected to be available by the end of this year or the first week of 2018. The company is currently testing Oreo updates for the Nokia 5 and 6 smartphones, which leaves us with only one Nokia smartphone yet to receive the Oreo update, the Nokia 3. Still, the company has confirmed that it will be receiving the Android 8.0 update directly.
