Google is expanding Google Wallet with a new feature that makes it easier for parents to send money directly to their children. The update, currently available in the United States, introduces a built-in balance that parents can fund and manage through Google Family Link.
The feature is designed to give children a safer way to make everyday purchases while allowing parents to stay in control of spending. It builds on Google Wallet for kids, which launched in 2025 with supervised tap-to-pay support and digital passes.
Parents can send money directly to a child’s Google Wallet
With the new Google Wallet balance, parents can transfer money to their child’s Wallet from a linked debit card or bank account. Funds sent from a debit card arrive instantly, while bank transfers typically take between three and five business days. Google says parents can transfer up to $2,000 every seven days, and a child’s Wallet balance cannot exceed $4,000.
Once money has been added, children can use the balance for in-store tap-to-pay purchases with their Android device. The balance cannot be used for online shopping or ATM cash withdrawals, making it more suitable for supervised everyday spending than as a full digital bank account.
Parents manage everything through Google Family Link or the Google Wallet website. They can add money, set daily spending limits, review transaction history, and lock or unlock their child’s balance whenever needed. Parents also receive notifications when money is transferred or spent.
A more controlled way to give kids spending money
Google says the feature is intended to help families manage allowances, lunch money, and other small expenses without handing children physical cash or unrestricted payment cards.
One limitation is that money transferred into a child’s Wallet balance cannot be reversed. If a parent accidentally sends too much, Google says the only way to recover those funds is by closing the child’s balance, so families should double-check transfer amounts before confirming them.
The feature is available only for supervised Google accounts and requires a Google Family Group. Children can still use Google Wallet to store supported passes such as event tickets, library cards, and gift cards, while payment activity remains visible to parents.
Google’s latest addition also brings Google Wallet closer to services like Apple Cash Family by offering a dedicated way for parents to manage children’s digital spending. The current rollout is limited to the US, and Google has not announced when the Wallet balance feature will expand to other countries. Until then, parents outside the US will need to continue using existing family payment options available in their regions.
