For the first time, Google Photos will launch as a fully integrated native app on a television platform. In a joint announcement today, Samsung Electronics and Google confirmed that Samsung Smart TVs will receive the app in a phased rollout beginning March 2026, effectively bridging the gap between mobile memories and the living room experience.
Bridging Mobile Memories to the Big Screen
While users have long been able to “cast” photos from their phones or use Google Photos as a passive screensaver, this collaboration marks a significant shift. This new integration allows users to actively browse, search, and interact with their libraries directly on the TV interface using the remote.
The launch aims to make the TV a central hub for nostalgia, moving photo viewing from solitary phone scrolling to a shared, immersive experience with friends and family.
Rollout Timeline
March 2026 (Launch Phase)
- The Debut: The Google Photos app becomes available on compatible Samsung Smart TVs.
- “Memories” Exclusivity: The initial release focuses on the popular Memories feature—curated collections organized by people, places, and events. Notably, this native TV implementation of Memories will be exclusive to Samsung TVs for six months.
Second Half of 2026 (Feature Expansion)
- AI Integration: Advanced features will be unlocked later in the year.
- Create with AI: Users will gain access to themed templates and AI-driven editing tools specifically optimized for large displays.
- Personalized Results: The app will introduce “Remix” capabilities and topic-based slideshows (e.g., automatically generating a “Summer Vacation” reel).
Why This Matters
This announcement ends a year-long absence of a dedicated Google Photos app for televisions—a gap that existed even on Google’s own Google TV/Android TV platforms.
By moving beyond simple casting, Samsung and Google are elevating the experience. The inclusion of Create with AI suggests the TV app won’t just be a viewer, but a creative tool, utilizing the large canvas of a 4K or 8K screen to edit and curate albums in real-time.
