The announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series took place recently at the Galaxy Unpacked Spring event on Feb 1. The S23 lineup has no major updates from its predecessors.
In 2022, Samsung was dominant in terms of software updates. We’re not just referring to their flagship phones; even their budget phones are receiving timely updates. Samsung turned its entire update situation around in 2022.

Samsung’s midrange A series phones got the Android 13 update much faster than their competitors. This also explains how Samsung took the top spot in the smartphone market share in India.
An average consumer does not care about extreme specs on paper, but they care about the reliability and consistency of software updates.
That’s where Samsung is currently beating all other competitors. Samsung’s budget and midrange A and M series got the Android 13 update way faster than competing phones, some of which don’t even have an Android 13 timeline yet.
How Many Updates will the Galaxy S23 Series get?
- Samsung Galaxy S23 series will receive four major Android updates and five years of security updates. This means the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra will be updated to Android 17 (One UI 9).
The new Samsung Galaxy S23 series ships with Android 13 (OneUI 5.1) out of the box. One UI 5.1 has slight performance and efficiency gains. We’ve got fixes, improved widgets, and better animations.
If you’re planning to keep your phone for a long time, there’s no competition for Samsung in the Android world. If you spend over 700$ on a flagship phone, you expect it to last.
The phones aren’t necessarily massive upgrades, but they’re excellent options for people upgrading from older flagship phones. At the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung officially announced that the entire S23 lineup would receive four years of major Android updates.
Google currently offers three years of major updates for their Pixel devices. However, Pixels get updates, and security patches still get updates on day one. But considering Samsung offers four years, their support is now better than Google’s.
If you care a lot about software updates, then the S23 lineup is a great choice. It’s not just Samsung, though, since OnePlus and Oppo officially say they’ll start four years of updates on select flagship models.
For the S23 series, four major updates work out to excellent firmware support until Android 17! After Android 17, they won’t receive any major Android updates, but they will still get occasional security patches,
Samsung’s promise includes at least five full years of support, so the final year will have some security patches and bug fixes. So, we should see the S23 lineup receive updates well into 2028.
The S23 and S23+ are nearly identical to the S22 and S22+. They both have 1080P 120Hz OLED screens, a 50MP 1/1.57″ GN5 primary sensor, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 3X telephoto.
The Plus model has faster 45W charging, starting at 256GB of storage. It also has a bigger battery and a bigger screen. Samsung discontinued the 128GB model for both the Ultra and the Plus. The entire lineup uses the TSMC 4 nm-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC.
The S23 Ultra is the super deal, with a new 1/1.3″ 200MP (HP2) primary sensor and improved video quality. The phone also apparently has better low-light performance and HDR too. But we’ll have to wait for tests and comparisons before we know more.
