ASUS Launches Zenfone 5Z, 5 and 5 Lite at MWC 2018

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer Asus unveiled its 2018 flagship smartphone of the year, the Zenfone 5Z, at the MWC 2018 event in Barcelona, Spain, along with two other less powerful variants, the Zenfone 5 and the Zenfone 5 Lite. All three smartphones bear a striking resemblance to the Apple iPhone X, containing even the top-notch. So, if you love the iPhone X and can’t buy one, you know what to expect.

Speaking of the design, Marcel Campos, ASUS’s global head of marketing, explains.

“Some people will say it’s copying Apple, but we cannot get away from what users want. You must follow the trends”.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z boasts an entirely new design compared to its previous generations. It sports a 6.2-inch display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of FullHD+ (2560 x 1440 pixels), making it even bigger than the Samsung Galaxy S9+. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 coupled with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage.

It features a dual camera setup on the rear consisting of a 12 MP Sony IMX 363 primary rear camera sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary camera sensor with 120-degree wide angle lens and f/2.2 aperture. The front offers an 8 MP camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture for selfies and video calling. The smartphone runs on the company’s ZENUI 5.0, based on Android 8.0 Oreo, and is backed by a 3300 mAh battery with ASUS BoostMaster and AI charging tech support.

The device carries a fingerprint sensor at the rear and comes with Face Unlock technology. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, NFC, and GPS. Additional features include Dual SIM support and dual 5-magnet speakers. The device is available in Midnight Blue and Meteor Silver colour variants.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 specifications almost feature the same specs as the 5Z except for the processor, RAM, and internal storage. Under the hood, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset coupled with 4 or 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage.

As for the last Zenfone 5 Lite smartphone, it is the least powerful of the three. It sports a slightly smaller 6-inch display with a 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution but a lesser screen-to-body ratio. It also skips the top-notch. The device will have two processors- Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC and Snapdragon 630 SoC. Similarly, there are two memory variants: 3 GB RAM + 32 GB internal storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB internal storage.

The Lite carries a dual camera set up at the back with a primary camera sensor of f/2.2 aperture and a secondary camera of 80-degree FOV. The front also offers dual cameras: a 20 MP Sony IMX376 sensor and an 8 MP camera sensor with a 120-degree wide-angle lens. The smartphone runs on the company’s ZENUI 5.0, based on Android 8.0 Oreo, and is backed by a 3300 mAh battery.

Though the company hasn’t released an official word on the price, the smartphones will be available at half the Apple iPhone X. As per speculation, the Zenfone 5Z will come with a price tag of 499 USD. The price of the remaining two is still a mystery. It’s confirmed that at least two smartphones will be launched in the Indian market; however, no exact date is confirmed.
