Apple Eyes Gemini Integration as iOS 19 Prepares for AI Overhaul

Apple already offers integration with ChatGPT for Siri. The company also relies on these models for pulling information from the internet. However, Apple is falling behind on AI features, and they need more partners to use AI in the software more effectively. For example, the ‘Clean Up’ feature from Apple Intelligence is still not up to the mark.

WWDC is a month away, and as per Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, Apple might integrate Google’s Gemini models with Apple Intelligence. This is a surprising collaboration, since the two companies are rivals in many areas, especially software and services.

After facing several issues with Apple Intelligence, it looks like the company is planning to diversify its AI models. Apple is late to the AI race, and does not presently hold an in-house AI model that’s on par with competitors. While development might be underway, it’s unlikely that Apple will manage with first-party AI.

In a recent antitrust trial, Sundar Pichai expressed that he’s hopeful of a deal with Apple. As per the CEO of Google, Apple might use more third-party AI tools to improve the performance of Apple Intelligence on iOS 19. Neither Tim Cook nor anyone from Apple confirmed anything like this, and we’re not sure about where they’ll integrate it. There’s a possibility of them using Google’s advanced image processing to improve the Clean Up feature, or integrate with the Gemini Assistant to further improve contextual language with Siri.

This also hints that Apple might work with other companies outside of Google and OpenAI for iOS 19. It makes a lot of sense to offer multiple AI services and improve the user experience. Apple’s own AI has not been very successful so far. Considering that fact that iOS already has the best apps by a mile, iOS 19 can act like a hub for the best AI services on the market, even if they’re third-party.

Bloomberg has also noted earlier that Apple might integrate Gemini with iOS 19. Code from older iOS 18.4 Betas shows that Apple is planning to add Gemini as an option. The timing of this new deal with Google is supposedly in the middle of 2025, which is coincidentally the same time that the WWDC event of this year will take place.

It’s interesting to watch this progress, since Apple might strike a deal with these companies that allows them to use multiple models at once. iOS could intelligently pick which model suits which prompt, and get the best results.

iOS 19 is a month away. Betas will begin right after WWDC, and public betas will follow a month or two after. We’ll get the final release in September, alongside the iPhone 17 series.
